Salon letters: hotbed o' wank
I don't think I've seen any Salon letters wank here; as it turns out, it's quite the treasure trove. Here's a couple of prizewinners from this week.

(N.B. If you're not a paid subscriber, you'll have to sit through the "day pass" ad to get to the materials. Also, if you're using Firefox with Adblock, you'll probably find that plug-in very useful. And finally, Salon posts its letters in newest-to-oldest order, so if you want to start from the beginning of each fap session, go to the last page first. by default, so use the radio buttons at the top of the letters page to change the view. Thanks to the mousie in the comments for the tip; somehow my gaze skipped right over those buttons.)

First up: responses to Diary of a Turkey Killer, one woman's account of raising, slaughtering, and eating her own turkey. This one is the proverbial fish-inna-barrel sort of thing; the omnivores and vegetarians get into it right away. One person even compares the article to OJ Simpson's "If I Did It". Good times.

Next up: well, speaking of OJ, Debra J. Dickerson urges OJ Simpson to do the world a favor and kill himself. In addition, she refers to the single men available to single moms of a certain age as "remnants". The peanut gallery goes nuts, as you might expect, with 162 letters at last count, taking her to task more or less equally for telling OJ to off himself and for the "remnants" remark. There's also a lot of "You go girl!" type stuff as well, and people telling off the YGG crowd for their cheerleading, and vice versa. Super good times.

Helpful tip: There are radio buttons at the top of the letters pages that allow you to decide what order you'd like to view them in. Just select a letters page, and then if you want to start at the beginning, click "Oldest first."

(I'm really *quite* surprised no Salon-letters wank has ever made it here. Look in particular for any topic about weight, and pretty much anything at all on articles in the Broadsheet blog. They have some consistent fat-baiting and feminism-baiting trolls.)

...how did I not notice the radio buttons before? Excellent. Thank you.

And don't forget Cary Tennis! Letters on his column regularly bring the wank. For some reason, though, it never even occurred to me to report any of it here -- until last week, when Broadsheet's "Fly the boob-hating skies" brought on a torrent of breast-feeding wank (with bonus freak-outs about germy airline blankets and Homeland Security!). Reporting that crossed my mind, but then I failed to do anything about it. Maybe I was subconsciously deterred by my lack of a boobie icon.

Yeah, I remembered that after I posted. I've largely given up on those, though, as they're always the same: people telling Cary his advice is terrible and armchair-diagnosing the letter writers. The only really novel wank there in the past several months was that time Cary went all meta and asked why the readers gotta be such haters--that was awesome.

BWAHAHA DEBRA DICKERSON

I only know who she is because, freshman year of college, her book An American Story (or whatever) was required reading for pretty much all incoming students ever. Even the professors thought it was pretty crap.

Gawd, I hate Salon with the fire of a thousand suns. Paying for everything by memberships and forcing people to watch ads to get content is so damn annoying. Unfortunately, they have som really kick-ass essays.

I thought the ads and the memberships were an either/or deal: either you watch an ad or you pay for a membership.

Heh. You hate them for their ads? I hate them for sucking. I've never forgiven them for claiming LAN parties are basically raves in basements, nor for running a story on racism in my town without ever checking the facts of what actually happened.

The article is primarily designed to stir up shit, far as I can tell. There's little to be gleaned from it other than, "So I *can* bring myself to kill something I anthropomorphized, go me!"`

OK. Because I'm temporarily stupid...

How do you get a day pass? It says "Click on the sponsor logo" - what is the sponsor logo? I'm using Firefox. I'm probably missing something really obvious.

(And all this to read a wank-causing article!)

Do you have Adblock on? Sometimes it won't show the logo if you do; you may also need to enable pop-ups. Or try this tip.

I cancelled my Salon subscription years ago, because their political "reporting" was a hotbed of wank. I love the K Chronicles, but not worth the bitter liberal vitriol. I can get that shit for free on my flist.

Hey, she says that when she killed the turkey she gave the wings away to someone who "wanted them for a costume."

I wonder if it was a childfree person featured somewhere down the page?

I think the 'home-grown' turkey may have had a better life than domesticated turkeys on farms bred for slaughter.

I just read the article.

When I was a child, my grandfather had a farm and raised chickens and turkeys. I saw firsthand what killing a chicken or a turkey entails. When Grandpap died, my mother and her brothers slaughtered and dressed the turkeys (there was no one to care for them - my grandmother was too sick) and I and my cousins saw the whole thing.

That said, I personally couldn't kill an animal, let alone one that I'd raised. I understand that some people don't have a problem with it, but I do. If that makes me a hypocrite for eating meat, so be it.

Kittenmommy.

Well, if you define hypocrite as someone benefitting from something they can't provide themselves, then everyone is a hypocrite. I couldn't kill someone, but I benefit from the protection of the army. Isn't that hypocritcal?

Huh. So, apparently you're never allowed to give a damn about your animals. Oh, sure, you can spend hundreds of dollars to feed and shelter and medicate them, but you can never actually - gasp - gain an ATTACHMENT to them! That just makes you a sick freak who only cares about their short-sighted wish to fill their stomach with turkey instead of tofu! You can only be totally heartless or not eat them at all.

... Oh, wait, I think I can hear the whole Tasmanian countryside laughing hysterically.
