Crying out justice, but seeking out triumphs (iwanttobeasleep) wrote in [info]otf_wank,

[info]therapysessions posts a list of essential gifts for men to [info]blackcigarette, a hipster comm that frowns upon department store clothing and the shift key. It includes a GQ magazine subscription, massively overpriced jeans, and a silver money clip from Tiffany's. Rather boring and uninventive, seeing as just about every publication is coming out with a nearly identical list this season.

However, more than one commenter finds it inappropriate.

"If these are the kinds of things men like, I'm going to be a lesbian!"

"Ha, the list didn't say 'The Essential Straight Man's Xmas List'." (This amuses me, because when I skimmed the list I immediately thought it was for gay/metrosexual men.)

"Not all men enjoy the same thing."

1) What's with all the self-help type books on the list? Am I the only one who would be offended if I got, like, a diet book for Christmas?

2) Her talk about moulding the "average Joe" into her ideal man is kind of lame. But the fact that she thinks it should be done by giving said average Joe subscriptions to GQ and a Tiffany's money clip makes me sad.

Because waking up at 2am and seeing your guy reading Collected stories by Gabriel Garcia Marquez will be one of the sexiest things you will ever see. Er, no. I've tried to read Marquez and have failed miserably, why would I want to force it on my boyfriend? Now if I woke up and found him reading Neil Gaiman, that would be a different story.

Okay, but at least they put The Professional on the list of things to get a guy, although I am completely distraught at the complete failure to mention Gary Oldman's awesomeness in said film.

Also? What the hell, people, it's just a gift list.

The list was "meh" but seriously, getting someone, especially your boyfriend, a diet book for Christmas? That doesn't really strike me as something most people would like to find in their stocking Christmas day, y'know.

Straight legged, not too high not to low waist, void of all cheesy overdesigned elements like fading, holes or back pocket stitch signatures.

I have a pair of jeans like that! I got it from Burlington Coat Factory and paid $12.

Why would anyone pay $140 for a pair of jeans?

Seems sockish to me. Or at least, he's copy/pasting what Cosmopolitan said about this gift list:
GQ does something that Maxim doesn't, it teaches you how to be a real man….[Esquire’s Big Black Book:] Buy one for him now. Heck, buy two to help you mold your man. [One of the diet books:] Help him get the body you've wanted.
Because the ideal man loves to be molded.

I bought my dad a scarf for Christmas.

Mind you, he is 55. He's probably far too old to be moulded into the "ideal man". Anyway, he's already good with money and he can cook competently, so does it matter if his criteria for picking out clothes to wear is "If it doesn't smell of toxic-level BO, it's good!"?

Am I the only one who felt slightly nauseated when they saw that 'Esquire' big black book? Knowing how to buy a tux, sure, but knowing how to iron or buy flowers or how to use hangers? Men need a BOOK to know how to do that? Not to mention the whole 'mold your man' comment.

The whole list looks like it was lifted from a magazine like GQ, it's got that patronizing tone down to a key (even the description of GQ sounds like the copy someone from GQ would write. "Helps him be a real man"...fuck off). Oh, and one of his 'friends' works at EGM too.

I don't think there's anything on that list I'd really want with the possible exception of the Leon DVD because I like Luc Besson and Gary Oldman rocks. In fact I'd probably be offended if I got a few of those.

I'd be sad if the guy I was dating had to be taught to be "real" by a magazine.

I bought my boyfriend a fishtank in the shape of a really big lava lamp. He's really, really excited about it. The fishtank was $25 and fish are probably a couple more bucks. There. I just gave him hours worth of entertainment, a new pet, and a color changing pretty shiny thing for less than $30 bucks.

ooh, I love the "not all men enjoy the same thing!" whinging. My roommate was reading through some teen fashion magazine and ran across a "what to get your guy guide" and was miffed because "(boyfriend) wouldn't like any of these. Why do they think all guys are the same?" and didn't appreciate me pointing out that out of all the articles in the thing assuming GIRLS like the same things, THAT was the thing she had the problem with.

The men in my life got a range of gifts from Jack Daniels Fudge, to Marley and Me because I want to make my dad cry for Christmas and books about Labradors are the way to go.

I hate the tone of these things. If the guy you're dating isn't what you want why don't you date someone else. It's not like there should be a mad scramble for men and you hang on to the first one you find.

I'll just be over here, wishing my Djarum Blacks weren't so trendy to smoke, because things like this shame me and my tasty cancer sticks.

I've been sitting here, kinda wondering, well, why wouldn't you just ask them what they want. And if they don't particularly want anything, arrange a nice dinner, either by restaurant of your own making, and just take that route.

I know I'm a pain to get gifts for since I tend to buy what I want immediately rather than wait for a holiday, and my boyfriend is pretty well the same way.

Or you could give the gift of sex.

Economical, good for the heart, and fun for both the receiver and the giver.

But no re-gifting.
