Academic wank ahoy!
I found this one in [info]wank_report, and it's too good not to share with the class. Academic wank makes my day.

Meet [info]bob_the_normal. Bob is a freshman taking a (community) college English course from a professor who has certain standards to his grading. Bob strongly feels he deserves an A. The professor, apparently, disagrees. Bob proceeds to write up a complaint to the lj group [info]academics_anon, a community with many members who work in in higher education.

How do I get an A in this class? I'm at the point where I'm going to ask him in the final week what he thinks I'm going to get... and if he tells me a B I will, basically, threaten to take all my essays to the English board for review. I have no doubt they will find my work excellent, and far above the average 1B student. I think this is completely unfair. I see that he wants to make people try harder, and that is fine... but it costs my future, not his. I'm not okay with that.

Is this merely the post of a disgruntled student, or could the professor have darker motivations?

To add to the pain of that, a very nice Greek girl is in the class and she has very good writing -- but she herself tells me she thinks that my writing is better. He gives her all As. He is Greek.

It's unclear whether he's looking for advice or validation, because he ignores the former and receives none of the latter. In fact, the community pretty much lets him have it with both barrels.

The entry itself is almost genius in its sheer amount of pretension, but the comments are where the wank really starts to flow. Bob apparently has some problems with constructive criticism. It's impossible to quote all of the good stuff here.

Maybe if you'd read more carefully, and not allow your own personal feelings of inadequacy in teaching invade your argument, you would have percieved the question I was (clearly) asking

I wrote my post in a hurry before class, I didn't realize that because it was an academic community that people would lack common sense... that is now noted.

I can be a pretentious as I want, as long as I'm right.

I think I'm adopting that last one as my personal motto.

Reading the entire post is worth it to see Bob spectacularly fail to get the point...over and over and over again.

There's also some bonus wank when he shows up in another post dealing with crying students. Don't you know that giving an F to a cheating student is just as horrible as the actual cheating? Why, they had reasons for cheating that you know nothing about!

And for the record, I would like to declare a moratorium on any username variations of "name_the_adjective". They're all invariably wanky.

He hasn't spent much time around academics, has he.

Oh, freshmen. I desperately want to read his writing if he thinks it's so good, it can't possibly be his fault he's not getting As.

So, in the cheating wank, he seems to be saying that it's the teacher's job to catch cheaters. But when the teachers talk about doing so...he's angry? Or annoyed? I am confused.

I apologize equivocatingly

I am spending too much time on my thesis, because my first thought when I read that was "Are you going to school to be a Jesuit?" And then my second thought was "I don't think you're using that word correctly."

Every time he says "Later" I picture a kid with a backpack over one shoulder turning to wave as he walks off into the sunset. Then somebody else says something, and the kid with the backpack reappears out of nowhere and does it again. So irritating.

I think his point is that students are people, and teachers are not. But I could be interrogating the text from the wrong perspective; I mean, I am a teacher.

I'm noting a lot of inconsistencies in what he says. For one thing he claims he was criticized for not spending enough time on Hal from Henry IV (part 1 or 2 I'm not sure), then later someone refers to a Hamlet paper, but Mr. Supercilious doesn't correct this obviously glaring error. Finally, he claims a little further down that it is an "American Lit" class. Why would anyone be reading a Shakespeare play in American Literature?

So what I gather is that his big shining example is that he missed the point of a writing assignment and got a B+ but should have coasted on the fact that he completed a paper full of words to an A?

Man, he's lucky. My freshman year (and even now, but I control it better) I was off on ALL KINDS of weird interpretations of writing assignments. My professor pretty much had to sit me down and threaten me with a C (at best) in the course to make me understand that "turning in good shit" =/= "fulfilling the demands of a writing assignment."

While his grading seemed extreme he always had a valid reason for grading it down in 1A. I saw and admitted my mistakes. At this point the "valid" reasons he uses are getting more and more subjective.

Hey, dumbass, ADMITTING your mistakes is not the same as NOT MAKING THEM AGAIN.

Given that I have one student who has consistently admitted that, yes, I have a good point when I fail him for not fulfilling the assignment, and then does the exact same thing AGAIN for the next paper, despite repeated warnings in the drafting process...

*goes off to be bitter*

Rule #4 on the comm info page: 4. No "I am a superstar, don't you agree?" posts. This is often part of #3 above ("Read my paper and realize my awesomeness so I can use it to feed my ego and to fuel my desire for revenge on my misguided and dimwitted professors!").

Clearly, he fails at reading.

This is why I love being in sciences. No one has any kind of an ego, it's all been eroded away by endless chem labs and biology papers you'd rather pull your fingernails out than do. And, of course, if you seem smart, people will try to make you help them. My walking into doors and falling asleep in class is protective camouflage.

I have two lab exams next week! *bright and brittle smile*

Man, I remember being crushed the first time in a college professor (actually it was a TA, but whatever) gave me a B+ on a paper - it was a Shakespeare paper, too. Henry the something or other part something (clearly I remember all the details). In retrospect, I feel like a total idiot not for the paper but for being so melodramatic to care about it, and I have never had the slightest desire to go back and look at the paper to see how bad it really was.

...my AIM name is Aisu the Spiffy. I'm scared now.

And this guy is great. XD I'd be glad to get a B in some classes! (Not English, but...) I trust my teachers to give me what I deserve.

He thinks getting a B in bonehead English is going to destroy his bright future? I can't wait till he starts on a major.

Bah, what a whiner. "Low" grades on account of supposed teacher bias are a dime a dozen. He should try facing a low grade due to announced, engineered grade deflation. Now that is a bitch.

(I love academic wank. Srsly. It makes me neglect my actual academic work. More A-Wank!)

Oh good god, I saw this on the wank report and almost posted it but then work ate me alive. This guy reminds me of WAY too many people I've known and mocked over the years. I'd love to see what he would make of one of my old music history professors who asked for two two-page papers over the course of the year...and demanded about twenty pages of in-depth research and composition analysis to back up those two pages and was hell on fucking wheels to get an A from. I slaved over one of those papers for a month to pull a B out.

He's going to be way too entertaining at a four-year school, especially the first time a teacher or class laughs out loud at his writing-fu.

Does he think high school = college? Because srsly... he reminds me of our high school valedictorian, and I REALLY disliked him. He made a comm for his poems and told us to join it so we can read them and be blinded by his genius. DX And he whines why I get higher grades on papers than he does because "she's always asleep in class* anyway, but I WORKED ON THIS FOR A WHOLE HOUR!! WITH A THESAURUS!!" Pfft.

High school != college, freshmen!! Whining may get you somewhere in high school, but college professors usually don't care, they're more interested in getting rid of people like you.

*So I admit, I usually am asleep during English class during high school. But eh, the teacher doesn't mind, so why does it matter?

What's going to be super fun is when he submits his work to the "English board", and they give him a lower grade than his instructor did.

This guy reminds me of that wank we had awhile back involving the pre-law student who wanted to know if his background in debate would get him into one of the major law schools and when he was told no refused to believe it because he deserved to go to Harvard or Yale because he's SPECIAL. I need to go find that one again.
