This thread in a nutshell, acted out by random pictures I uploaded off my desktop.

: My icon is l33t and talks about the English language stealing vocabulary.

: The English language did not steal words.

: What about 'raccoon' or 'schadenfreude'?

: The English language had words THRUST UPON IT. If you knew what I knew about the English language and medieval times, you'd understand that.

: I think we have kind of a lot of foreign words, actually...

: Let me repeat my opinion a few times with copy/paste, you obviously don't get it.

: How about 'canoe'?

: *Cries at being misunderstood* You're all stupid. STUPID.

Yes, see, littlelamb (represented above by the creepy cat) feels strongly offended at the implication (in crazycatlady's icon) that the English language may have stolen words and feels that it is necessary that we know that.

In copious and repeating detail.

Over several hundred comments.

Including a few copy/pastes, just in case you missed her argument the first time. Not that you'll be capable of following it.

And if you don't get that, you're a moron.

Of course, people (ironically, everyone except the owner of said icon) can't stop poking her over it, either.

Eventually, we get to accusations of stupidity and ::ACTIONED!:: crying. And it's all good.

Actioned crying is teh best. You can just feel the pain. Though my very favorite is still from a fake death wank a few months back:

We're so scared! What's happening to our big sister?! *runs away crying*

Apparently not before stopping to write it down and post it on the internets.

Huh. And here I thought we picked up quite a portion of our vocabulary from vigorous mercantilist imperialism resulting in both the exploitation of peoples and resources as well as the convenient appropriation of vocabulary!

The scene: English is walking along, whistling, pockets filled with words from every other language on the planet.

James Nicoll: Hey! You stole those!

English: Did not! They, um, fell off the back of a wagon. I think there was a Frenchie and some Vikings driving it. They went thataway.

Littlelamb: How dare you accuse English of stealing those words! It was framed. All the other languages ganged up and planted those words on it. You should be ashamed of yourself, you big bully!

English: Look, I'm just gonna pick up my enormous vocabulary--which I obtained by entirely ethical and legal means--and back away, all right? You two can just work it out among yourselves.

i'm sorry that you do not comprehend what it's like to have a passion that would make you take the time to pause and give thought to a matter at hand. [...] what's in my nature or what isn't is completely unfathomable to you.

Now I understand his/her/its username: English is a poor little lamb, forced, FORCED I SAY to take words from other languages and bastardize them because those other languages are bigger and stronger. Not because, you know, English tends to use too many words to describe a single concept or anything.

Stupid, wimpy English.

I guess the saddest part is that I enjoyed the creepy cat/ robot overlord/ etc. portion of this post the most.

Also, medieval lit. does not make you champion of the English language: sorry, Lancelot, but the princess is in another castle. It just qualifies you to apply everything in life to Breton lays, Chretien de Troyes, and/or Canterbury Tales/ Decameron. Granted, that's why I almost did it myself, but...

[info]esclaramonde

Seriously, I'm ashamed of myself.

my point is more that the majority of the words did not come from, as the icon puts it, 'beating up other languages' to steal their vocabulary. it came more from as you said, things like the norman conquest or the viking invasions- when the bearers of other languages came and violently instilled their own vocabulary onto the english language.

I kind of half agree. (OTF Wank, why must you always do this?) I mean, I agree that in the far past, this was sort of so - but then, English didn't *have* to take on the French vocabulary. The Normans were pretty fine with speaking French and letting the peasants speak their grubby little language, if I remember correctly. So now that I think about it, I don't really agree anymore.

ALTHOUGH. Faeriedaemon: It's a Germanic language with mishmas taken from Latin, Normandy French, Parisian French, native tribes (i.e. Saxons and Anglos and whatnot), and then came to America where it took and took and continues to take from other languages.

Where's the base, then, if it has bits taken from the Angles and Saxons? It didn't get purposely cobbled together! At least put the "native tribes" at the front of the sentence. Thank you.

DONE NOW THNX

Feels Inclined to THRUST MYSELF onto this threat

....in my university the only things the PHDs in Medieval English cared about were finding references to beastiality in a variety of Medieval texts. Apparently it wasn't actually hard to do.

Also, my English teacher used to rave at length about the how English was such a great language for literature because of the amount of appropriated words in our vocabulary.

Yes, some of the words did come our way by way of reivers and invaders and what not. However, the impressive thing (to paraphrase a vaguely remembered point, so do forgive if I screw up) is that English did subsume those words and integrate them. Unlike, say, Welsh or Irish.

If you listen to RTE you'll hear 'Irish Irish Irish airplane Irish Irish Budget DIY'

So...umm....English is more like a linguistics adulteress, gleefully accepting the word presents offered by the invading tongue (oh dirty) and birthing little mongrel words that she passed off as totally pure?

It would be nice if littlelamb could accept the fact that English did not stop evolving in the Middle Ages and, in fact, went on to knock over languages and rifle for vocab.

...Sometimes, when languages are taken advantage of, they grow up to take advantage of other languages. And thus a vicious cycle of violence is born.
