"Yeah, I'm sorry that you killed your cat by letting it outdoors."
[info]koskosneko posts in Cat_Macros asking people to caption some pictures of her cat who went missing.

[info]tankgirlh immediately jumps in with the following:

Cute cat.
Looks like he's an indoor/outdoor cat- the average lifespan of an outdoor cat is 3 years. That goes up, depending on the percentage of time he's indoors of course.

Will you please keep your next cat indoors where they belong? It's so much healthier for him (and less sad for you when they go missing).

I'm not trying to be rude, but it makes me sad when pretty kitties go missing because they are allowed outdoors.

It all goes downhill from there. Most of the people involved are pretty civil, but [info]tankgirlh faps up a storm.

ETA: The mod has laid down teh smack.

Uhm, mine is indoor/outdoor, and she's been around for 6 years now? Believe me, as hyper as she is, she'd have had a much SHORTER lifespan inside all the time. She rulz in many ways, but her time outside is best for everyone. She even goes for walks with me. ^_^

the average lifespan of an outdoor cat is 3 years.

Where do you get statistics like that? It seems like it'd totally get screwed over by any outliers, like people that have outdoor cats and live near major highways.

Both cats I originally grew up with were both outdoor cats and both managed to live about 15 years before they bought it.

And now all I can think of is the deaths of those two cats, and now I'm just feeling kind of depressed... :-(

Militant pet owners are on my shit list just below "DO YOU KNOW JAYSUS" evangelists. Both of them choose to preach their holier-than-thou schtick at the WORST time and then get all pissed when you tell them to have some goddamned tact.

It makes me want to yell SHUT UP JUST SHUT UP ALREADY.

Which is not to say that people shouldn't learn how to take care of their pets... it's just that random people on the intarwebs != veterinarians, and people need to stop acting like they got their vet degree with Doctor House.

I find there is a lot of WTF in that thread. The thing that gets me is the "If you adopt a stray cat you can't ever train it to stay inside!!!!11" which is totally not true. One of the cats I have now was taken in by the people I adopted her from. She was a stray and she is now strictly indoors and is perfectly content.

*I* don't and won't let my cats outside but I'm not going to judge someone else who does. If their cat is happy and healthy, what's it to me?

Fairly tangential, but I have two cats that are brothers (and gay and incestuous, but that's for another thread). They're indoor cats, but occasionally they like to try their luck. Or at least they used to, because one of the first times they got outside, the larger one decided to have one of his first seizures, pretty much on the front stairs. It scared the shit out of him, so now when the door's open he'll stand in the wedge formed by the door and the wall and peer out the crack. The younger one still books it outside every now and again but will come to you if you jiggle a bag of treats.

He'd never make it as an outdoor cat anyway. He's such a princess that he'll meow to no end if he can see the bottom of his bowl, nevermind the fact that they've never gone hungry a day in their lives and he's just too dumb to knock more food into the bowl from the gravity feeder.

My cats are also insulted by the rampant use of poor spelling used to represent the superior intellect of cats. However, the few good macros totally make up for everything. I'm currently fond of the Jack Sparrow one here

I will never fail to understand what is so hard about "Gosh, I can see advantages to keeping cats indoors only AND to letting them outside if they are speutered/vaccinated/regularly dewormed!" Some cats can go either way, some prefer indoor-only, and some will pitch an ungodly fit if they have to stay inside. Honestly, if you're keeping your cat fixed/up to date on preventive care, I don't think you're a bad pet owner to let them go outside (unless, like, coyotes and/or Bigfoot, commonly eat cats in your area) sometimes. But neither is it "cruel" to keep a cat indoors.

Why are so many people idiots? o_O

I live in a block of houses that has gardens (street-sized gardens, that is) at the back, and actual street at the front. Cat goes in the garden, humans go in the street. Simple as that.

My sister refused to keep her cat inside, leading to her 5-year-old son having to see three of his kitties get run over before anyone got a clue.

My brother, who is slightly smarter and had a cat named Leetah instead of, you know, "Mittens" or "Simba", used to take it out walkies on a (body-)leash. Everyone happy, cat got outside, &etc.

In short, yeah, I'm on TG's side.
