Christmas Presents Wank
I was wandering along from another wank and decided to take a look at an LJ community, [info]fuckyoulist. I was reading through some of the posts and agreeing with the OPs and then I came across this-

http://community.livejournal.com/fuckyoulist/8192572.html

Knowing there was no way wank could not be far behind it I checked out the comments and ol'-
you got Hannukah shit not xmas stuff
you wouldn't even be invited for Christmas, you spoiled, ungrateful brat
lessons in growing up
homeless and orphans

Sprinkled throughout are comments and discussion about what age is too old to exchange gifts.

Please Note: There is a comment in there saying the OP is 17. I went and checked the OP's LJ and it clearly states that she is 18. I'm going with what the OP says herself but if there is a problem let me know.

Another post on present hate

I'm sure that this post will be something you'll just laugh about god forbid anything happens to your mom.

"And what if your mom DIES, huh? THEN what will you do?"

Not that the OP wasn't being wanky, but... yeah.

I made it here? Holy canolli with a cherry on top, this is the best Christmas prezzie ever! (not really. I likes the ones I actually got before christmas a ton better. But this is nifty, too :D)

I know it is bad form to come over to defend oneself and all that, but as it is I am not POd about the presents or lack thereoff as mucha s i am about my mother's lack of christmas spirit/any effort to actually make this an enjoyabvle holiday. cause, ia m tahmnkfull for the box of chocolates but the fact that it came in a plastic bag of the local wal-mart equivalent is just a bit of a last straw, like I said in the comments to my entry. *shrugs*

I sympathize with the OP - it's tough when you feel like people you care about didn't put any thought into your gifts, especially when you're young enough that you're still financially dependent on your parents (not that the expression wasn't more than a bit wanky, but you know).

The post is wanky, yeah, but that kind of shit is frustrating. Like the year I was 8 and my brother got a bike and I got a copy of The Guinness World Records (wtf). It just sucks when your parents don't bother to spend that five dollars in any productive way and then use the fact they bought you something to hang over your head all year.

Seriously, that's what I'd be doing if it were my kid because I would guess that this type of behavior isn't just isolated to Christmas.

I sympathise with the OP. It's not like they were complaining "My parents got me a PS3 when I really wanted a Wii", it's "My parents obviously threw some crap together without a thought of what I'd actually like/need."

Although I am interested to know what s/he got her/his parents.

I understand the frustration too, a bit, but I don't think it's anything "fuck you" inducing. I got a couple things I wanted that I pretty much picked out and then random stuff I probably need. Same as everyone in the family.

At least it's not bath sets. *HATE* the bath sets.

And pester's _patronizing_ little shitfits I could do without.

Everyone's twatty in the post--I mean, call the girl an ingrate, but her mother IS alive and not sick and therefore does not really have an excuse for what presents she bought, so stop bringing your dead mothers into the argument, you know? While the world understandably does not revolve around one person alone, she cannot be obliged to always think of the dead mothers. And the orphans. And the homeless.

It's weak and lame to bring them up when all you want to point out is that she's being a little dramatic.

Post is too riled up, but not totally unreasonable. Commenters just took it way out of the zone with their equally unwarranted FUCK YOU replies.

Guess Christmas really is over now. :|

I do think that she's overreacting a little since she still got two of the presents she wanted. Kind of negates the whole, "OMG YOU NEVER GET ME ANYTHING GOOD!" part of the argument. I do understand the general sentiment, but this is a bit much. My Mom would make and send these freakishly elaborately wrapped boxes of gifts to my sister throughout the year, and my last birthday at home only got me a, "Wanna go to Wal-mart?" It's not necessarily about the object itself; its about someone who is supposed to care about you being dismissive.

OMG MY PRESENTS WEREN'T WRAPPED Girl can go fuck herself though. Not getting into the Christmas spirit isn't a crime. Some people even *gasp!* don't celebrate Christmas. My parents don't even have a Christmas tree! I guess they're the worst parents and Scrooges the world has ever known! They should have done everything in their power to make my widdle Christmas just absolutely perfect, those bastards!

Some people are just plain bad at doing the whole 'poignant gift that shows they listen to you and know about your interests'. It is a flaw in their DNA. Truly. Until we find a cure, please keep their condition in mind and make sure they get a receipt so you can return/exchange items. (I think everyone in my family is returning/exchanging at least one gift this year)

Or you know, maybe they've done this on purpose because they don't care about you, and want you to slit your wrists. They bought you the towels because they fear for the fate of your carpet.

Man, I feel no sympathy at all for this girl. The only thing I got for the holidays this year was POTC2 on DVD, which was nice but a little bit silly when my Dad knows I didn't really like the movie that much.

Admittedly, I totally failed to ask for anything. In my family, if you don't actually ask, you probably don't get it. Which is why I still don't have a birthday present, over a month after my birthday!

This is why I love the Dutch way of doing the presents thing a few weeks earlier. No one's complaining that you can't whine about your presents destroying the family Christmas spirit, because it's not Christmas! Hurrah! Thank St. Nicholas for a day that IS just about the presents.

Plus, gives us more time during Christmas for that Christmas spirit of eating shitloads and doing nothing.

WOW what a cunt. Seriously. It's not like her mother got her...say...makeup/jewelry in hopes she'll act more "girly" whilst knowing for a fact she hates it why no, I'm not dragging in poorly disguised personal experience!. Towels and washcloths are things that can and will likely be used, at least. Plus, she got some of the things she did want. Girl needs to stop being an ungrateful, bratty twat.

Yeah. No sympathy from me. Maybe it's from growing up poor, but there were many Christmases/birthdays where I didn't get anything, and you know what? I still managed to smile and hug my parents on the day. Almost as if I cared about them and was grateful for all they'd done for me, even if money was too tight to buy a pair of socks. So getting towels and washcloths1 seems perfectly fine to me. No one is ever going to love every gift they receive, but at least the other person went to some effort to show some love.

Bitch.

1 Who doesn't need more towels and washcloths? Practical gifts rock.

Am I the only one who loves to get things like socks and towels and sheets and cookware?

I throw my hands up at the idea that towels and socks and things aren't thoughtful.

Also? I might be more understanding of the OP's frustration if it weren't for the fact that she did get those other two presents that she wanted. So what if she had to point them out? Isn't making a list doing the exact same thing? She got two things she wanted. Her parents were obviously willing to get her something she'd like. She can shut the fuck up any time now.

... I guess this is why I tend to go "MONEY PLZ" whenever someone asks me what I want for Christmas. *shrug*
It's easier and hey, at least I'll actually use the stuff.

And towels beat the empty handmade paper box I occassionally get.
*stares at the bath set she got* :|

Wow. This makes me feel like so much less of an ass for ranting about what my roommate got me for Christmas. Nothing like a good entitlement bitchfit to make you feel better.

(My roommate got me big plastic garage storage shelves. For HER garage. In which I have practically nothing. So I can go clean up HER garage for her. Lovely, no?)

My Mum couldn't get me anything this year. She has seven kids and is on a pension. But she made us the best damned Christmas dinner ever. Scads of hommus and wonderful salads and she busted her back on the giant ham. I got her a necklace and some real sandalwood and she was *so* chuffed.

Point being - presents are the last of my concerns during Christmas. This person could learn a thing or two from going without for a while.

Lack of sympathy here. My sweet 16 was spent in a free clinic waiting for my little sister to be strep-tested. No gifts either.
