Current music:Manic Street Preachers - Of Walking Abortion

CNN used a picture of a rat who'd had a face transplant to lead into an article on face transplants and ADDED theratgoddess posted about it in Ratties and, man, is sicpuppy ticked.

That's not the biggest bit, though.

The biggest bit is where sicpuppy tells Niiku that there are alternatives to all forms of animal testing but that she doesn't need to say what they are. And that we are lied to and FORCED to take these drugs.

ETA: The poster of the OP is theratgoddess, not sicpuppy. She's also not as amusing.

So...sicpuppy's rats "have" to take medicine that was developed by torturing other rats. Yet s/h/it would not be opposed to torturing people (death row inmates) to get human medication. Does s/h/it think tht rat medicine could be developed by testing it on humans?

I am SO disturbed by the amount of agreement the comm has on testing on death-row inmates. At the very least, that's assuming each and every one of them is actually guilty. And past that...ARGH!

I love how the one poster talked about this sci-fi story about taking away basic human rights from anyone who breaks the law and probably misses the entire point of the story. And by love, I mean I kind of want to go kill myself to escape the stupid.

Obviously because Im not prepared to sit and write out essays for lazy fuckers who can't figure out how to use google, it means there is obviously NO alternative to animal testing and I don't have a point? LOL.

In the time [info]sicpuppy spent telling everyone over and over in multiple comments how she didn't have to provide examples of alternatives to animal testing, she could have provided approximately twelve-billion alternatives in the same space. Jesus.

Every time they talk about alternitives, I think about one of the big alternitives, which was hiring poor students to have medication tested on them.

Then I think of the guys who nearly died in the UK this year due to that alternitive. And testing on animals? Doesn't seem so bad.

Seriously, I love animals as much as anyone, but could they really look someone who needed the procedure in the eye and say that the animal is more important than they are? We're talking about human beings, here!

Not even getting into the death row inmate thing. It makes me all stabby and rageful.

Unfortunately, because a fucked up law dictates that drugs have to be tested on animals before being used for human consumption, it leaves people NO OPTION but to take these innacurately and dangerously developed drugs.

So, uh, is sicpuppy volunteering to labmonkey? Or is s/h/it simply willing to throw inmates under the unstoppable juggernaut of scientific evil?

Someone should show [info]sicpuppy the articles about the dog who had a puppy head grafted onto his shoulder and the monkey who had his head grafted onto another monkey's body. And the monkey whose brain was removed and transplanted to another animal's abdomen and, well, it didn't really do anything there but kind of be.

There are plenty of stories that are more horrifying that she could be using to convert people than omg! face transplant on a rat! that actually ended up helping someone! TEH HORROR!

I really love comments in discussions about animal testing that betray the speaker's total lack of knowledge of how animal research works, like this one:

They're used because they breed quickly are are CHEAP. Wonderful priorities for people who are 'supposed' to be scientists working to aid human health. Cheapest option!

1) Yes, rats and mice are used because they are a reasonably inexpensive mammalian research subject. This is because, shock and horror, research is expensive and grants are thin on the ground these days. Relatively inexpensive animals = more research gets done = better outlook for human health.
2) I get this feeling [info]sicpuppy has this image of scientists buying rats by the sack from Big Bob's House O' Discount Mammals and would be shocked to see how much some of these research animals actually cost.

Im not saying labs are specifically anti rat, Im sure their disrespect for animals extends equally to all species

Hey, [info]sicpuppy? While you're telling everyone else to go do research, why don't you check up on the stringent standards established by IACUC for animal research, generally aimed at minimizing animals used and animal pain/suffering? Why don't you read up a little on why minimizing animal suffering is considered both good scientific ethics and good scientific procedure? Then you can tell us to our faces -- tell the veterinary students and Humane Society volunteers and caring pet owners who work in animal research -- what cruel, heartless mad scientists we are. G'head. Tell us, you utter ignorant dipshit.

... okay, so that was a lot of Thoughts On Yaoi even by otf standards, but speaking points of righteous indignation are like potato chips: you can't have just one. (And they're bad for your blood pressure.)

You know, the OP is definitely out there. And a bit crazycakes.

And I'm not saying that animal research should be stopped, or that all scientists who conduct it are mad sadistic puppy-mutilators. Some animal research is very important, and many labs do the best that they can to make sure their subjects don't suffer too much or even die with a little dignity.

But there's a lot of really horrific stuff happening to a lot of animals out there so that we can wash our hair with shampoo that won't hurt our eyes, and take cholesterol drugs that don't make our kidneys fail. And the fact that so few people seem to appreciate or even acknowledge that makes me really sad. How about a "thanks, mousie," and not a "FUCK YOU, YOU DUMB LITTLE RAT, I HAVE MY PROZAC AND THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS!!11!"

I mean, I know that doing so acknowledges the fact that another living creature suffered so we wouldn't have to, and that can be painful and maybe even disturbing, but I bet it's not even a fraction as disturbing as life was for those chimps who were infected with HIV and then given all kinds of arcane and debilitating therapies while drug research was going on.

I'm just saying.

*takes off wanky hat* Sorry, y'all. I'll mop up, I swear.
