It's not true if it's not in Wikipedia.
Ok so it's not true in this case, but it's part of the wank. And I couldn't think of a title.

Over on [info]bad_service, [info]whammypower788 posts a link to an article about a guy who gets the cops called on him at Best Buy for wanting a refund for a CD.

Things start off immediately with an argument about whether there really is a 'law' saying you can't return CDs for money.

It's the law! Wiki doesn't say so! The RIAA does! We don't live in the RIAA! all in one thread.

Small but I think it has plenty of room to grow.

EDIT: This wank has been linked on [info]c_suck_snark here. Thanks to an anonymouse on my journal for tipping me off.

Er, I know in California it's illegal to re-sell a CD as new if it's been opened, which is why most stores will not refund or exchange opened CDs unless they're defective, and then it's only for another copy of the same thing. It's just not in any store's best interests to give refunds for stuff they can't re-sell.

I'm nearly 100% certain it's NOT illegal to give refunds, because despite our policy the managers at the Borders I work at do occasionally give a refund to a customer if they get all irate (so like why do we even have the rules, I ask you??) and so far nobody's shut us down.

Oh my, claiming that it's illegal because it's a "law" of the RIAA is absolutely adorable.

Plus, I love her condescending tone toward the guy who wants his money back. How DARE he want a refund for a nonworking product! What an entitlement whore!!!

I like that people seem to be confused as to whether it's a "copyright law" or an "RIAA law."

I don't know about you, but I live under the jurisdiction of the sovereign trade-group of RIAA and the holy corporation of Microsoft. You mean there's another way for there to be laws and rules?

So, the big question is, can you still get student fiancial aid if you attend the Wikipedia school of law? Because that's an internet degree I could get behind.

You can get financial aid, until some other Wikipedia user decides that you don't.

My sister works at guest services at Target and their policy is that if you return a CD or DVD because it is defective, then they have to give an opened copy of the same CD/DVD. She said it's to prevent people from buying a CD, burning it onto their computer, making copies, and then getting the money back thus getting a free CD.

When I worked at Meijer in the electronics department we had the same policy and it makes perfect sense if you ask me. If they wanted the CD/DVD in the first place I don't know why they just can't take the replacement.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]thesilentsenshi

Because they probably didn't want the cd afterall. Turning down a replacement of a defective item to me signals a red flag.

Not really....to me it just sounded like he got all pissy because he had to wait in a long line to exchange the cd, so by the time he got up there he was all huffy and like, "Well fine, I'll just take my money back then!" Arguably wanky, but hardly a signal that he is some sort of cd-burning deviant.

Oh well, I didn't see that part. Wouldn't it take longer to get money back than just take a new cd? Silly man. Everyone knows when you want to exchange something when there's a line, it's best to have the thing in hand. *eye rolls*

Same with video games because I know there are people like my brother who would play a game for 2-3 weeks then try to give it back.

What if they don't have another copy of the same album? Do they make the customer wait the weeks or months before they can get another copy (as frequently happens with the rare albums that I like)?

I got a refund for a Fleetwood Mac cd not because it was defective but because I didn't want it. I did have a valid complaint. The one track that I'd bought the album for was not listed as being a live track. It didn't have (live) after it. Some of the others did. As I didn't want the live version I considered the CD cover to be false advertising and got a refund that way. The staff weren't happy because I was in the right.

The funny thing is that if you really want free CDs, you should just borrow them from the library. I have't done it myself, because I haven't gotten into new mainstream music in a long time, but my friend used to.

Pathetic. Kudos to RJH for standing up to these Best Buy mendicants. They didn't count on a customer calling their bluff. Doubt RJH will be purchasing many Tony Bennet CDs from them again.

What this means for your weekend: If you believe a store is wrong, stand up for yourself.

Meet their threats with complete confidence.

Be like Violent Acres, who, on the advice of her Marine father, kicked a bully in the nuts with her Cabbage Patch rollerskates and yelled while standing over his body, "I'LL EAT YOUR EYES! I'LL EAT ALL OF YOUR EYES!

Something tells me I'll see a post relating to this on [info]customers_suck in a few days.

Which type of theatre -- stage or screen? Working as a backstage techie wasn't so bad; after three months as a movie-theatre usher (= underpaid assistant janitor also...) they wanted to take my hair from me, so I ran away and went back to college. I honor you for providing a haven for my fallen comrades in the noble war against Theatre Management.

...okay, so, the guy didn't get belligerent with them? Didn't use any sort of foul language with them? Make any threats?

*Smacks the store's manager with a rolled up newspaper* BAD MANAGER! VERY, VERY BAD MANAGER!

Honestly? Didn't it occur to someone that putting the disk into a CD player or something would have been less time consuming than calling the police and then having to file a police report? If the guy is that insistent that it's a disc read error, I don't see why they wouldn't have checked.

Oh, right. Best Buy. Forgot who I was dealing with...
