Seattle is famous for insanely wanky public arguments vigorous policy discussions, so it’s hardly surprising that the Seattle lj community is also a fountain of wank place where online debate sometimes gets a bit heated.

Yesterday, there was a school shooting in Tacoma and a short post about it has given rise to a rainbow of wank.

First, there was a brief outbreak of grammar wank, because using the indefininite plural for a singular subject is serious business but that exploration of the limits of language pales when the gomezticator declares Tacoma a ghetto. [info]melvillian, already wanking away and calling on expertise in the first thread, is a Tacoma native, and the wank takes wings.

It has spread to gomezticator’s LJ where no more sense is made. ETA I don't actually know anything about Tacoma, but I agree with you exchange, possibly the funniest thing in the whole mess.

And because I am a completist at heart, ETA 2:

Gomezticator can't understand why other people won't stop talking about Tacoma.

We are also informed in this wank that Littleton, CO is "ghetto."

It's indicated on the map by that murder that happened one time, actually.

I am nothing else if not a diligent cartographer. Mapquest is scared shitless.

Though I am embarrassed to admit I didn't even think of it when drawing up this map. The Littleton murder shown on the map is actually an unsolved bowling-alley double murder. And there's also another country club on the other side of where I am, but I guess we could always claim that's ghetto, too, because that's where all the tax-cheat dawgs at.

I was going to try to make an equivalent map for me, but it's sort of irrelevant; ten years ago there was an outbreak of gang violence, but they've all killed each other/gotten life sentences/joined the Army and it's relatively quiet now.

Of course the Letters column in the Olympian insists that downtown Oly is the most run-down and dangerous place in the world, which just shows you how easy it is to scare people with one boarded up building and about six revolving panhandlers.

Is that all it takes? Man, Osama bin Laden's going through so much effort, when really he should buy a house in the middle of the Hamptons and stock it full of homeless people and crackheads. Our upper-upper class would plummet and go crazy and take our economy with it quicker than you can say "property values."

Heh. Ah, London. My map would be covered in lots and lots of Red Circles of Crime. Only recently I had to walk past two Yellow Crime Notices of Doom on my way home.

Those Red Circles of Crime and Yellow Crime Notices of Doom should get together and make hot sweet lovin' while comparing crime stats.

One reason I posted this is because I was this >< close to wanking at [info]gomezticator on the subject of "almost being mugged:" my husband and I were followed from Westlake Center to Pioneer Square by a couple of extremely shady types who went away when we found a cop to stand next to: in Seattle, on a Sunday afternoon. But, yeah: cities are dense, there are parts of them that can be tricky to navigate, and parts where you can forget to lock your dorr overnight and not worry too much about it.

You were that close?! I have been mugged, among other things!

Others have been through much worse. I could only laugh at the 'I was almost mugged comment', otherwise I might have to track him down and show him what crime really is, with the aid of a nail encrusted clue-by-four.

Well, I once got hit by a flying stereo speaker when my house was being robbed- in Olympia, in the South Capital neighborhood.

I'd hate to have my house robbed, I don't think I would ever feel safe in my own home again.

A flying speaker...? No, I'm fairly sure I don't want details.

...yeah. There wasn't much to that story, really.

Hee, I live in a NICE area of London and we had one of those lovely Yellow Crime Notices at the end of my road. Murder! It was very exciting. And the, uh, park behind my house is rapey. "Serious Sexual Assault" has stopped really meaning anything now.

Downtown Oly is the most run-down dangerous place in the world? Jesus. I really dunno if the clientele of my upscale furniture shop think that.

In other news, I used to work on South Tacoma Way. Now THAT part of Tacoma is legitimately ghetto.

People are going ON about boarded up storefronts, of which there are...one? There's a 10-15% retail vacancy rate, which my real estate investor sources say is barely adequate to welcome new businesses. And since every parking lot in our fair sprawl has its member of the sign-holding class, the fact that there's a few smelly guys down-town trying to bum cigarettte money is, like, not a sign of ghettoization.

(But tell that to Jeff Kingsbury)

There's ONE. The burned-out office supply shop that they're still having property wrangling over. A couple of others could use a facelift, but they're not exactly condemned for crying out loud. There's no business turnover, really. The guys looking for money aren't even that bad! There's a couple homeless guys outside the store and they're totally nice and hell, they offer snacky cakes.

(You tried telling Jeff anything lately? Yeesh. It's like pulling teeth with single-ply thread.)

Haven't actually seen him since Casey Raiha's final high-school appearance. I'm sort of glad to have stepped back from the theatrical crowd.

Shit. I just spent three weeks in Bangkok and Cambodia, but I wouldn't even have to have done that to assert that much as I love this area, PNWers really should leave it once in awhile.

I've yet to encounter anywhere in Seattle, Tacoma, or Olympia as alarming as, say, southeast D.C. at 2 a.m.

Wow, according to wikipedia, a whole 6% of the population in Littleton is below the poverty line. That's ghetto, right there.
