Flickr is a website where people share photos of themselves, often with complete strangers.

Nachismo is a photo-sharing member who comes with a harrowing tale. Apparently, someone else on Flickr (Whitman) had some pictures of his daughter posted on a pedophilic site (the original story has been taken down, so no further details). So she creates a petition to make Flickr stop the pedophiles from viewing photos of children on the site. Throughout the comments there is a lot of support, and people calling for the balls of pedophiles on a silver platter.

Flickr should be a safe website for friends to meet new friends and to share pictures: Flickr should not be a playground for pedophiles.

There's also: It's okay to spam and if you don't like it, you're with the pedophiles!

And: I'm sad that my paranoia keeps me from showing pictures of my kids to complete strangers.

Whitman comes in to say that: Flickr accounts should be verifiable. Like Paypal. Even the free ones.

Not to mention: They seem to have a big problem with spamming.

And this last one, because no wank report is complete with someone bringing logic in a tl;dr style.

I'm not familiar with how Flickr works, although apparently I've got an account there, but why don't they just, y'know, use filter settings on photos prone to misuse? Or ask for that. Or if they can't have that, NOT post the photos at all. People should have realised by now that there is no way to police the internet, just what we do on the internet.

2.) Your Already Able to Protect yourself: Flickr already provides a facility for people to mark photos, private, or for friends and/or family. If someone wants to upload photos of their children and is concerned with who views them they should simply mark them to be viewable only by friends and/or family. (From the last link)

I think we have a winner!

And, um, anyone who can't figure out Flickr's incredibly simple filter settings when they're uploading a pic should not be on the intertubes.

In my beautiful dream world, it's easy to stop people you don't know from doing things that gross you out. All it takes is a Care Bear Stare and an online petition.

I like how they think that a proof of credit card will stop predator from getting the pictures. It seem really innocent of them.

That last link where they desperately try to explain to that woman that you can't make someone not able to get at an image is hilarious. "But can't we implement a script?" "No, it's just not possible." "...but can't they implement a script?" "...no. We'd have to rewrite the entire internet." "But what about a script?" "Look, have you ever heard of 'print screen'?"

Dude, just how do they plan on telling who is a pedophile and who isn't? A little quiz?

"Do you like to think dirty thoughts about little children while looking at their pictures?

"Do you want to have sex with kids?

"Are you going to reproduce these pictures where other child-lovers can see them?"

Christ, people are DUMB.

Children these days are missing out just because of the odd person who has irresistable (and disgusting) urges. Shame.

Missing out on... what, exactly? Having strangers look at pictures of them on the internet? :/ I think it's more the parents being miffed they can't show off their kids to strangers on the internet.

Dude, Flickr wank!

Personally, I don't think Flickr's security is all that bad. I'm sure it could be better, security can always be better, but they do have measures in place to protect the users -- options for controlling who can download the pictures posted and who can blog them, plus views can be restricted to the general public, contacts, friends and/or family.

How come the answer is never as simple as "if you're so concerned about someone stealing pictures of your kid, don't post them publicly on the internet"?

The Plan:

"Welcome to Flickr. In order to proceed, you must not be a pedophile. There is material on this site that (normal) people may find inoffensive. Enter at your own risk.

I am not a pedophile.

I am a pedophile.
"

I think we also need to move to stop the bestiophiles from getting on LiveJournal and putting everyone's cat pictures to inappropriate uses.

Flickr: like that one new grandma at the office who shoves her grandbabies' pictures in everyone's face, but if she were eight hundred pounds and had a tendency to shriek in your ear if you looked at her grandkid's pictures wrong.

Goddamnit, I hate Flickr communities.

Lemon Frosted says:

What seems to be the problem here is that there are a lot of people who are categorically incapable of accepting the risks inherently associated with the internet, and are inventing complex fantasy worlds in order to cope with that.

But why can't there be a world where there's some sort of anti-murder device? I think the police should do something about that. It would be quite simple, perhaps a flying monkey would follow everyone around and then if they saw someone with a knife or a gun pointed at their person, attack them. I don't know how exactly, I'm not a flying-monky-ologist, I leave these details to experts.

So she creates a petition to make Flickr stop the pedophiles from viewing photos of children on the site.

I'm just imagining a solution like the warning over hello.jpg on Goatse... "FLICKR USERS HAVE INFORMED US THAT PEDOPHILES MAY BE LOOKING AT THIS PICTURE. SO IF YOU'RE A PEDOPHILE, MOVE ALONG." Does that make me evil?

The only way to make this even remotely fair is to create a petition to make Flickr stop children from viewing photos of pedophiles on this site. Send them both to their own separate corners is what I say. So the site needs more sign-up questions like the ones suggested above: "Are you a child? Do you enjoy looking at pictures of pedophiles?"

After reading about just another bloke's sending of IP addresses to the FBI, this popped into my head. Aided and abetted by [info]littlebitca, of course.

"Jones! JONES! It's your turn, dude."

"No way! I opened the damn email last week, it's Smith's turn!"

"nuh-uh. I'm not going through eighty-five IP addresses, seventy-five of which are his damn wife logging into their Flickr account from work again! NO!"
....

"There's doughnuts. With chocolate sprinkles."

"Not even for rainbow sprinkles and creme filling. No. Don't we have interns for this kind of stuff?"

(in background)

FBI agent on the phone: "Dude, stop telling your friends when you post new photos and they'll stop looking at them." (listens) "Well, then, stop telling your Aunt Margaret that you've posted new pictures. Sir, I am not going to go and arrest 'some guy in Baton Rouge' for clicking on a photo link. No sir, I'm not. Yes, sir, that's your right. Sue me!"

"The last intern ran away screaming something about how maybe living in a cave with no electricity wouldn't be so bad. Now just open the email."

"No. Not gonna and you can't make me -- urk! Hey! Leggo of my hand. Don't click on it -- oh crap."

(of course in my head, Smith is now McKay and FBI sergeant/head of stoopid people guy is Sheppard)

Ya know, my sister has this same issue, so if I ever want to post a picture of my gorgeous niece to my LJ, I have to make sure it's okay with her. And I entirely respect that. My sister has the presence of mind to know her own issues and to take control measures into her own hands.

These parents wanking are the kind of people who, when their kids fall off an awesome set of monkey-bars, then sue the council for having the monkey-bars not only too high, but not surrounded by foot-thick cushions of duck down.
