Foreskins and peenies and brises - oh my!
Yay for Salon.com. While many of their articles (on such topics as the Iraq war, socioeconomics in the far East, and the latest electronic gadgetry flying out of Steve Jobs' ass) generate letters that are interting, thoughtful and even civil, when they put up what are commonly called "lifestyle" articles, the splooge can fly so thick and fast you could very well drown in it.

Herein a tale of a Jewish husband caught in the Circumcision Wars.

A rather amusing story of what can happen when your wife and your parents Do. Not. Agree. on something you really don't care about one way or the other. (Since it's a Salon link, you have to click an ad to get the whole article.) But the real fun happens in the Letters section.

352 letters so far. We got it all here -

"Circumcision is barbaric!" "No, it's clean and healthy!"

"It's religious, so it's idiotic!" "Don't you DISRESPECT MAH JEWISH AUTHORITAH!"

"It's nothing compared to female circumcision!" "That's not relevant, you hairy feminist!"

"It's no big deal!" "It's traumatic and scarring!"

"I did it to myself!" (No, I'm not making that one up.)

And the occasional appearance of a few head-scratchers wondering why people get so freaked out about this. (That included me, by the way, but since I posted my reply very early and nobody responded at all, I don't think it counts in the splooge explosion, which took a while to gather steam.)

NOTE: In order to get the wank stream flowing correctly, remember to click the "Oldest First" button on the first page of the letters, otherwise Salon will list them in the reverse order.

Boy, nothing like an article about bodily functions to make the crowd at Salon go APESHIT.

I can't say I really get why everyone's so freaked out about it, either, and I say this as a man that's had one</a>.

Because new parents get freaked out by *everything*. Not to mention that no matter what decision you make, from feeding to what diapers you use to what color you paint the nursery, there is someone waving a "study" in your face to prove that you are about to permanently fuck up your child.

Luckily I didn't go through much of that. I spent a lot of my teen years babysitting and providing daycare for my cousins from birth onward, and had figured out that babies are far tougher than people give them credit for.

Ah, circumsision wank...

Whether or not to get my son snipped was the first full out roarfest I had with my then mother in law.

Granted I'd read up on the procedure as much as humanly possible, and even seen one done and after discussion with my then hubby, we decided that we weren't going to have the baby cut. His mother went into a tizzy (she's not Jewish) insisting that we HAD to circumsize the baby. She gave me all the 'it's healthier' arguments and how she deeply regretted that she hadn't had my then hubby circumsized as a baby since she didn't know about the procedure.

While up until then, I'd been pretty easy going with her, my temper won out on this and I informed her that it wasn't that much extra effort to just teach the baby when he was older how to properly wash.

We went a few rounds over it and when I didn't budge, she appeared to let it drop. Then while both me and the baby were still in the hospital, one of the nurses comes in the room ready to take him for the procedure and for me to sign the paperwork for it. Damn if my mother in law told them I wanted it done.

High Holy Hell was raised yet again, and mother in law insisted that she knew what was best and I probably wasn't thinking clearly because of the meds I was given for my c-section. Hubby took the not getting involved route and kept quiet while I cut loose with full snark about the amount of meds she kept scamming doctors on so it was look who's talking with not thinking clearly with drug haze.

End result was my son wasn't circumsized and mother in law tread very carefully around me for quite a few months.

Over the years I've been with guys both clipped and not, and really haven't noticed a difference. If a guy's not going to wash his equipment right, it's not going to matter whether he's snipped or not. I've seen gamey on both.
Naturally I kicked up a fuss and

Hmm. Where I come from, boys get circumcised pre-puberty as a rite of passage. I don't think it has anything to do with religion. It's considered a thing of great shame if a boy reaches a certain age and hasn't been circumcised yet. And of course, even if he doesn't want the other kids to know he hasn't been cut, they'll find out anyway. His mother/grandmother/aunt will probably tell the other kids' mothers/grandmothers/aunts. I have no idea why. That's just the way it is. For this reason, along with a lot of others, I am glad I'm a girl. :P

Yah know - it's not really much of an issue here in Australia. Cause, well - nobody really does it. Most men have the opinion "Leave the cock ALONE!", and most women don't care as long as they're clean. At least, that's been my experience.

So, I don't really know what to say, other than, "Leave the poor cock alone." They need their little hats to keep them warm in the winter. *nods* Poor things.

I have said it before during the circumcision arguments, and I will say it again --

the "it loses sensitivity" argument doesn't hold water with me, because every one of the men I have been intimate with has attained orgasm, and all but one were circumsized. So I can only conclude that the circumsized male is plenty sensitive enough, because while I'm confident I'm good in bed, I don't think I'm that good.

I was all set to be vehemently against this if I ever had a son. Then I found out that, when having sex with an infected partner, circumsized men are less likely to contract AIDS.

Now I'm a lot more floppy (so to speak) on the issue.

It might reduce sexual sensitivity, but it obviously doesn't really effect sexual performance or interest. All the men in my family are circumcised (even the ones on the not-Jewish side, I don't really know why), and all the adults have children (and I once walked in on my brother masturbating because he had headphones on and didn't hear me knock on the door oh god ohgodwhyaaaaaaaaaauuuuugh).

So if the guy I marry is also Jewish, I'll probably have it done on any male children I might have. Unless they seem likely to be headed for Antarctica.

I am from Canada and circumcision is so rare that I really don't know what to say or think about this debate. I don't know anyone who has been cut so yeah, I have problem understanding *why* this procedure exists (apart from a strict cultural ritual). What I can say tough is that I think uncut dicks are prettier.
