The depressing thing is that I've actually heard that argument being used in my presence, along with "I'm only trying to help this poor child by providing emotional presence/I really care for them/I'm a subtitute for their neglectful family."

Now I remember why I went quite depressed two years ago, hanging around those sort of people.
