TQC gender-wank!
*stolen from a mousie on [info]wank_report*

So, [info]katyowns asks [info]thequestionclub if it's ok to let her son wear a skirt to school. Most of the answers are *gasp!* reasonable, but there are always a few wankers in the bunch.

[info]redlightlove starts off the party by proclaiming boys only wear skirts if they're fairies. People of course call him on this, and he backpedals with the classic "I was doing it for the LULZ." [info]redlightlove then makes it to [info]stupid_free (which stays amazingly free of wank).

Next up, we have [info]renewedme, proclaiming that the kid needs to go to therapy to find the "root" of his problem. Anyone else having "But I'm a Cheerleader" flashbacks? Continuing on this theme, she states that dressing as the opposite sex could come from "underlying problems" and that she sees "nothing wrong with our society's attitudes toward gender at all." There is another round of "Bitch, plz" from those assembled. There's also a discussion on whether ten year-olds understand sexuality and gender identity, culminating in accusations of repression.

Finally, [info]supernovacaine gets in on the action, wondering why transsexuals can't just wear goddamn pants like all the other women in the world.

Personally, I'm just in favor of clothing that keeps the naughty bits covered. At least on most people. Jeri Ryan is allowed to wear as little clothing as she likes.

I see nothing wrong with our society's attitudes toward gender at all.

Well, that makes one of us.

I'd say head, meet sand, but they've obviously been friends for years.

We have women's commandments and men's commandments. And we follow our roles, no matter how we feel comfortable.

I just surprised myself in a bad way by going "oh come on, what's wrong with it anyway?" and then realising the boy is ten and going "uh. Maybe not." Why is it different if the kid is ten? D: I don't understand my own reasoning! Heeeeellllp!

No, he's 10, he's far to young to decide things like that on his own. If he wanted to dress up like the Wolfman, I'd say no too. It's not his decision to make at that time. He's a child and he needs to know that he can't do anything he wants. It will just make a spoiled kid. When's he older, he can do whatever he wants.

Urgh. Someone doesn't get that it's more than just wanting to wear a dress. Dressing up as Wolfman =/= wearing a dress because you don't feel comfortable in men's clothing. And he's definitely not too young to decide. Funny, I was feeling quite sure my gender was screwed up at around seven, and I'm hardly a isolated case of that.

There are things you do in public and there are things you don't do in public.

Get in your closet, you damn different people! People might catch your disease and start challenging the societal norm! Like public masticators, who are clearly a menace to the human race. Good heavens, they don't even bother to close their mouth, some of them.

How would a school decide which clothing rule to impose?

I don't think it would take them long to realize that the male dress code would be best suited: pants on a female isn't shocking to anyone, really.

I understand your points, and think they're well-meaning, but I happen to firmly believe that school isn't a fashion show...if your clothes are distracting, then you, and others, likely aren't getting what you need out of school.

And in a stunning display of irony, hir username is deviatednorm.

Jeri Ryan is allowed to wear as little clothing as she likes.

Not only is she allowed, she should be encouraged to do so. Also, I can't believe that this is my only JR icon on journalfen.

Additionally, [info]renewedme is a fucking moron.

I cut down trees, I skips and jumps, I like to press wildflowers,
I put on women's clothing and hang around in bars.
I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay,
I sleep all night and I work all day...

See, I don't know what I'd say. I think it'd be something like, "Well, if it makes you feel more comfortable, that's fine. However, there are people who will probably make fun of you and hurt you. It won't be fair, it never is. They won't like it because they'll think it's weird and different. Some people will see you that way regardless. You can either be so completely weird and different that they'll stay away from you, or you can try and fit in as best you can."

...that's probably too much for a ten year old, but then, I don't know too many boys at ten that want to wear a skirt. A friend of mine wears kilts though, except it's too darn cold for them. I told him to suck it up and take it like a woman, we suffer for our short skirts because we haven't the sense to come in when it's raining sometimes.

You know whenever someone feels the need to put that disclaimer in their argument, you just know the rest of it's just not going to go over too well.

...why not a compromise, and buy him a child's kilt? He can graduate to skirts later when he can fight back on the playground! Also, buy him skirts for at home. Nothing wrong with that.

Do you how I’ve longed to have a girl? Being saddled with three boys, I’ve tried to persuade each one they might be happier being a girl, but no takers. Every time I go to the shops and see cute little dresses, I sigh.

Oh, the kid's a sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania.

And the But I'm A Cheerleader flashbacks are all over the place. Next thing you know, he'll bee a vegan and displaying a poster of Melissa Etheridge in his room. Or, in his case, as he's a guy, I'd probably go with the late Freddie Mercury.

As long as he doesn't want to wear jean skirts with leggings underneath, he's cool and I'd fight the school. No son of mine is dressing in tacky fad shit, though.

I love it

Does he want to wear a skirt because he's transgendered or wants to be a transvestite or something, or does he want to wear it because he likes a healthy breeze 'round his privates?
