TQC gender-wank!
*stolen from a mousie on [info]wank_report*

So, [info]katyowns asks [info]thequestionclub if it's ok to let her son wear a skirt to school. Most of the answers are *gasp!* reasonable, but there are always a few wankers in the bunch.

[info]redlightlove starts off the party by proclaiming boys only wear skirts if they're fairies. People of course call him on this, and he backpedals with the classic "I was doing it for the LULZ." [info]redlightlove then makes it to [info]stupid_free (which stays amazingly free of wank).

Next up, we have [info]renewedme, proclaiming that the kid needs to go to therapy to find the "root" of his problem. Anyone else having "But I'm a Cheerleader" flashbacks? Continuing on this theme, she states that dressing as the opposite sex could come from "underlying problems" and that she sees "nothing wrong with our society's attitudes toward gender at all." There is another round of "Bitch, plz" from those assembled. There's also a discussion on whether ten year-olds understand sexuality and gender identity, culminating in accusations of repression.

Finally, [info]supernovacaine gets in on the action, wondering why transsexuals can't just wear goddamn pants like all the other women in the world.

Personally, I'm just in favor of clothing that keeps the naughty bits covered. At least on most people. Jeri Ryan is allowed to wear as little clothing as she likes.

And here comes pester, to remind me once again why I left my religion...

http://community.livejournal.com/thequestionclub/16729436.html?thread=305214556#t305214556

We have women's commandments and men's commandments. And we follow our roles, no matter how we feel comfortable.

Does that mean women have to wear skirts and spend their time cleaning the house, raising the babies and cooking the food?

Oh shit! My mum wears trousers and has a full-time job. My dad cooks about half the time. I'm living in sin!!!

From what we've heard about her intentions, her child is either going to end up completely socially inept, or rebelling something powerful.

You're not the only one. She's so fucking smug and self-righteous. She belongs to a few communities I'm in, solely for the purpose of inciting wank (much like her friend karnythia) and then 'reporting' it on stupid_free. Hmmm. Lashon hara much? Bitch!

Good God I hate her too. The thing that gets me is that she's NOT a troll, or so it seems. In my experience, super-religious Jews don't spend much time on secular/potentially immoral websites. And yet, Pester is fucking EVERYWHERE. Her bigotry is a-ok, cause ya know, it's her speshul religion. Not to mention, if you're familiar with booju-land, Corin13 gets all kinds of really hateful comments and shit because she's Christian, despite the fact that she's an avowed anti-racist and way less of a homophobe than Pester (not that any degree of homophobia is ok, but you see my point.) I can't stand Pester's smirking, buddy-buddy attitude she whips out whenever she's called on her shit.

I love that in Pester's mind it's absolute that it is wrong for women to wear pants. Not in her opinion, but an absolute, dammit!

It must violate the absolute moral code in the universe. (this statement brought to you by another wank of hers)

Unless you press her on it. Then it's "Just her opinion" and she can't be blamed for it because she's "really, really conservative."

It makes me feel bad for the conservatives.

I don't see the problem with trying to make an argument that holds absolutely, universally. You have to be prepared to be wrong, but why is it somehow the most godawful thing to try to discover whether there might be things true of all human beings? You can do it within any given formal system; sure, maybe you can't do it for subjects as messy as politics or religion, but it's not frivolous to think that you might. And no, I don't think that I'm just clinging to Plato like a baby blanket. I have reasons plenty modern to think that some actions can be categorically wrong.

I would much prefer an argument for why such and such is a universal moral law, or why such and such is great/beautiful--yes, for all cases--than a bunch of waffling about My Opinionville because whoever's posting doesn't feel like making a reasoned, critical examination of his opinions. Opinions can be correct or incorrect.

For example: I submit as an absolute truth that Pester is a wanker who hasn't made any such reasoned, critical examination.

That just gave me a huge head-trip...I internet-knew Pester quite well when we were both in high school...and she was incredibly liberal, would always argue against the religious conservatives, wanted to be a lawyer, and I'm almost positive was not herself religious at that point. And I'm SURE it's the same person.

WEIRD.

I believe this may be what's known among religious Jews as "ba'al teshuva syndrome" where the person in question goes from being not religious to need to be more religious than anyone else in the world, and needing to show that they don't question the Truth. I'm sure it happens in other religions too, but I'm not sure what they call it.

(A ba'al tehsuva is someone who becomes religious after a period of being non-religious, basically. Most of my friends were ba'alei teshuva and I'm not trying to insult them in general, believe it or not. Just anyone who gets religion, any religion, has to watch out for that.)

But I should probably finally stop analyzing her behavior, since I don't know her at all.

since everyone else is taking the time to say what an idiotic twat they think [info]pester is?

I don't think she's stupid or mean. She explains the moral code that she follows, and I have yet to see her insult or belittle anyone who does not follow that moral code. I have a lot of admiration for people who truly believe that they should submit to the will of their creator, no matter how unpleasant such submission may be.

...Maybe it's just the Catholic-turned-atheist in me, but I just can't agree. It's nice that people have that much self-discipline, but I really don't understand how someone can look at a rule like "it is immoral for women to wear pants because it's immoral for women to wear pants" and not wonder why a supposedly omniscient being would come up with a law that ridiculous.

Of course, people can believe whatever they want, but the grey area for me is that they enforce these views on their children, and while frequently it's harmless and the kids will get over it, sometimes it can be extremely mentally damaging. Teaching a child racism, on the one hand, while completely and utterly vile, is probably not going to fuck a child up on a clinical level. Sending a child to anti-gay camp to get reprogrammed should be criminal, however. Of course, I haven't done enough thinking and research into this to draw any sort of theoretical line. And I know that the argument that forcing a child to conform to the wrong gender identity qualifies as abuse is a nigh on impossible sell, considering most Americans believe in transgendered people even less than they believe in bisexual ones.

And I've utterly forgotten where I was going with this. I think the point is that [info]pester is a vile twat no matter how devout she is.

I figured pointing out that I thought pester's comment was obnoxious and intolerant was part of the pointing and laughing intrinsically involved here.

If someone uses their religion as a reason to be intolerant and/or homophobic I think it's as subject to pointing and laughing as anything else.

But...but...

I don't think anyone in the Bible wore pants at all!

I definitely know that to the Romans, pants were what the northern-dwelling Barbarians wore, so they definitely didn't have them in Roman-occupied Judea, when Jesus was walking around.

So no one should wear pants! Everyone should wear skirts!
