TQC gender-wank!
*stolen from a mousie on [info]wank_report*

So, [info]katyowns asks [info]thequestionclub if it's ok to let her son wear a skirt to school. Most of the answers are *gasp!* reasonable, but there are always a few wankers in the bunch.

[info]redlightlove starts off the party by proclaiming boys only wear skirts if they're fairies. People of course call him on this, and he backpedals with the classic "I was doing it for the LULZ." [info]redlightlove then makes it to [info]stupid_free (which stays amazingly free of wank).

Next up, we have [info]renewedme, proclaiming that the kid needs to go to therapy to find the "root" of his problem. Anyone else having "But I'm a Cheerleader" flashbacks? Continuing on this theme, she states that dressing as the opposite sex could come from "underlying problems" and that she sees "nothing wrong with our society's attitudes toward gender at all." There is another round of "Bitch, plz" from those assembled. There's also a discussion on whether ten year-olds understand sexuality and gender identity, culminating in accusations of repression.

Finally, [info]supernovacaine gets in on the action, wondering why transsexuals can't just wear goddamn pants like all the other women in the world.

Personally, I'm just in favor of clothing that keeps the naughty bits covered. At least on most people. Jeri Ryan is allowed to wear as little clothing as she likes.

How would a school decide which clothing rule to impose?

I don't think it would take them long to realize that the male dress code would be best suited: pants on a female isn't shocking to anyone, really.

I understand your points, and think they're well-meaning, but I happen to firmly believe that school isn't a fashion show...if your clothes are distracting, then you, and others, likely aren't getting what you need out of school.

And in a stunning display of irony, hir username is deviatednorm.

I think that's the reasoning why one guy who wore a skirt to school (in high school) for Halloween was sent to the principal's office and told to change.

We had a couple of guys dress up as girls one year and no one seemed to mind ... until one of them went into the girls' bathroom and this girl dressed as a bee freaked out. (I was in there, laughing.)

The kid who dressed as the Antichrist, he got in trouble. But it was a Catholic school.

(They did have picky-ass rules in general though.)

At my high school there were officially designated days for the football players to wear little cheerleader skirts. It was some school spirit thing.

I love how people who say "clothes shouldn't distract!" tend to forget that it doesn't really matter. In secondary school at least, clothes are used as a method of classifying which group you belong to, and how you dress isn't really the only way to do it. There are dozens of other ways. If it isn't clothes, it's accessories, or what music you listen to, or your race (in some parts of the country, regretfully). Kids are going to classify themselves no matter what.

Also, why should we adopt men's clothing? Why not girls? Because it's unacceptable? Why can girls wear guy clothes but guys can't wear girls? Is it really so bad?

"Girls can wear jeans and cut their hair short and wear shirts and boots because it's okay to be a boy; for girls it's like promotion. But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, according to you, because secretly you believe that being a girl is degrading."

I don't get this. I went to a high school where nothing was said or done when people showed up with day-glo hair, piercings, or a guy randomly decided to traipse in dressed in a cheerleader's uniform. We really weren't distracted any more than "Oh, Shane's got a new hairstyle today. Okay, time for Chem."

I think going crazy over dress codes is a sure way to get the kids distracted.
