TQC gender-wank!
*stolen from a mousie on [info]wank_report*

So, [info]katyowns asks [info]thequestionclub if it's ok to let her son wear a skirt to school. Most of the answers are *gasp!* reasonable, but there are always a few wankers in the bunch.

[info]redlightlove starts off the party by proclaiming boys only wear skirts if they're fairies. People of course call him on this, and he backpedals with the classic "I was doing it for the LULZ." [info]redlightlove then makes it to [info]stupid_free (which stays amazingly free of wank).

Next up, we have [info]renewedme, proclaiming that the kid needs to go to therapy to find the "root" of his problem. Anyone else having "But I'm a Cheerleader" flashbacks? Continuing on this theme, she states that dressing as the opposite sex could come from "underlying problems" and that she sees "nothing wrong with our society's attitudes toward gender at all." There is another round of "Bitch, plz" from those assembled. There's also a discussion on whether ten year-olds understand sexuality and gender identity, culminating in accusations of repression.

Finally, [info]supernovacaine gets in on the action, wondering why transsexuals can't just wear goddamn pants like all the other women in the world.

Personally, I'm just in favor of clothing that keeps the naughty bits covered. At least on most people. Jeri Ryan is allowed to wear as little clothing as she likes.

I love that in Pester's mind it's absolute that it is wrong for women to wear pants. Not in her opinion, but an absolute, dammit!

It must violate the absolute moral code in the universe. (this statement brought to you by another wank of hers)

Unless you press her on it. Then it's "Just her opinion" and she can't be blamed for it because she's "really, really conservative."

It makes me feel bad for the conservatives.

I don't see the problem with trying to make an argument that holds absolutely, universally. You have to be prepared to be wrong, but why is it somehow the most godawful thing to try to discover whether there might be things true of all human beings? You can do it within any given formal system; sure, maybe you can't do it for subjects as messy as politics or religion, but it's not frivolous to think that you might. And no, I don't think that I'm just clinging to Plato like a baby blanket. I have reasons plenty modern to think that some actions can be categorically wrong.

I would much prefer an argument for why such and such is a universal moral law, or why such and such is great/beautiful--yes, for all cases--than a bunch of waffling about My Opinionville because whoever's posting doesn't feel like making a reasoned, critical examination of his opinions. Opinions can be correct or incorrect.

For example: I submit as an absolute truth that Pester is a wanker who hasn't made any such reasoned, critical examination.

I think many people do. It's the extent to which some people take it that gets... wanky.

Or maybe it's just that theirs aren't the same as mine so they're wrong and they suck! [Kidding. No, really, kidding.]

And if you can actually do that without begging the question or making an argumentam ad "I have squishy feelings I don't understand, therefore they must be an innate human law", you deserve a lifetime supply of cookies. :P
