Over at [info]seattle, [info]validkittykitty wanks about gun control. This is reported to [info]stupid_free, where, unsurprisingly, the wank continues.

But... but... having Mr. Avtomat Kalishnikov as a roommie is illegal in some states and makes that person a criminal by just like me having any amount of cannabis makes me a criminal by law. Oh, never mind.

- Signed,
Still boggled that some states actually have the "declare your party" space on their voter registration forms after all these years.

Wait...is this not usual? Unless I'm misunderstanding you here...isn't "declaring your party" necessary to vote in party primaries?

Not for most of the twentieth century in Washington- until the Supreme court inflicted the totally alien idea of party declaration on us. People are pissed.

Maybe in your state, but in many, like mine, you have to be a registered member of your party to vote in the primaries. Republicans choose the Republican candidates, Dems the Democratic candidates and so forth.

My WTFness for years has been over people identifying themselves as "registered Republicans", "registered Democrats", and so on. I had no freaking idea what that meant until I found out that in a number of states there's a section where one has to pick a party (or "decline to state" like I saw in a California voter registration form).

I don't know about other states but Illinois doesn't have this on their voter registration form. One doesn't "declare party" at all. In the presidential primaries, one is required at the polling place to pick a party ticket ("Which ticket do you want, Republican or Democrat?" "Uh, can I have both plus the 'other'?" "Sorry, ma'am, you can only have one. Which one would you like?")

Clear as mud.

But it's the first sentence that looks like word salad to me.
