Over at [info]seattle, [info]validkittykitty wanks about gun control. This is reported to [info]stupid_free, where, unsurprisingly, the wank continues.

I wish I could see some more logical arguments from the anti-gun crowd other than the usual touting of statistics since it doesn't seem like they've ever been on the other side of the fence and been in a situation where a gun's use made a difference since banning guns doesn't affect the criminals having them.

And if I remember rightly, after the UK passed thier gun ban, the number of knife violence skyrocketed and then the knife ban went up. Anyone over there please correct me if I'm wrong.

Maybe because on my Dad's side of the family, they do hunt, I'm okay with ownership of on some firearms. I don't see the reason to be owning assault rifles and such for just home protection or hunting.

True story:

At the Wal-Mart a few blocks away, the clerk at the deli was attacked by her crazy ex who tore over the counter and began stabbing her repeately. A customer who was in the area shot the guy (New Mexico's an open carry state). Since this was at least a year or two ago, my memory's a bit fuzzy as to whether the guy lived or not-don't think he did, but she was in critical condition and had not someone done something, very likely would've been killed.

In a case like that, I do think it's a good idea to be armed, though others would likely disagree with me.

Sorry if I rambled, it's way past bedtime for me.

No; you're right (as far as the stats I've seen are concerned!). Gun crime/illegal guns etc have gone up since the ban was set up - and the ban is set up sufficiently badly that our Olympic shooting team are more or less forced to train and practice in France.

*sigh*

That's probably because anti-gun people don't have the guns necessary for their use to make a difference.

(And that sentence doesn't sound right, but I can't think of another way to word it.)

But what are your thoughts on yaoi?

LOL!

Reading over that now that I've gotten some sleep, I was rather verbose.

Though as far as yaoi goes, when done well it's great. Done poorly makes me want to spork my eyes out.

They also seem to ignore or be unaware of the differences in gun laws from state to state. Washington is one of the less restrictive states in this regard; pretty much the only way you can be denied a license here, from what I can tell, is to be a convicted felon (and even there, there are exceptions; if the felony in question was fairly mild, you can petition the courts to restore your right to carry and they very well might). On the other hand, when I was growing up in the D.C. area I seem to recall the laws there being quite restrictive. Didn't stop D.C. from topping the national homicide list for many years.

Living in the UK, and in a rough area, I've got to admit I'm rather glad of our anti-gun laws even so. Yeah, our random killing rate is still high enough for competing for who had the most creative murder nearby is a fairly regular activity (my personal entry: when I was a kid my mother dated a man who last year was uimprisoned for cutting his wife into little pieces and putting her in the freezer), and yes you can still get guns if you know where to look. But they're expensive, and most of our petty criminals are cheapskates who will go for the cheaper knife option.

Which is still scary. But you can run from a knife. You can hide from someone with a knife. But a stray bullet can get you by *accident*, and that is scary to me.

Wordy Mcwordy. We have high level of shooting-deaths in Harringey but ... I cannot imagine how bad it would be if everyone were legally allowed to have guns and ammo. People get knifed over fucking trainers. :(

I've gently tugged a friend from a MUCH NICER area down in the South away from someone before, without telling here that the reason we don't argue or stand up to this drugged up individual was that in this area, at this time, he most likely has a knife and we are two young-looking girls on our own, and we need to LEAVE NOW. (Eight months later I finally let that slip and she freaked out). That was unnerving enough without worrying about a gun too.

(Although on a less serious note, I'm still giggling over the case years ago in Newcastle. The IRA left a nail bomb in a Nike bag. A market trader found it, and then had to stay closer than was safe until police came because people kept trying to steal it.)

Pfft. We've had guns banned here since 1997 unless you're a member of a rifle club who practices frequently, a farmer protecting your land against feral pigs, or a police officer, and it's drastically reduced the amount of gun-related violence here. Natch, it still exists in the underworld, but hardly anybody complains about it. But then, that's because Lolstralia is 1000000x better than Lolmerica.
