Just be glad I didn't go with the wanking [info]lesbians.
Can you guess what community is wanking again? Yup, it's [info]stupid_free! To explain this wank I shall do an interpretive dance paraphrase! Choice bits:

"hay guyz atheists have a persecution complex isn't that stupid???"

"Atheists get the cold shoulder because they're amoral. Atheists are amoral! Amoral, I tell YOU!"

"Morals don't come from religion. Haven't you heard of secular humanism? Why no, you haven't! D:"

"Dude, your moral compass shouldn't come from the big guy in the sky."

"All morals come from religion, dammit!"

"I feel like I'm talking to a Martian! D:"

So if you're an atheist, you're also a hedonist. Nice to know. :D

Glad? D:

Since it was a terribly unfunny wank about how "bio-born" lesbians (i.e. not transgendered) are being oppressed by the ones that are transgendered, and therefore need their own community on LJ where the evil transpeople can't get at them. Oh, and need to be complete asshats toward any transpeople that go, "Umm, about that now . . ."

It was sad. D:

Man, every time I had hedonism explained in school it was done with this example:

2 men walk past a bar and tell themselves not to go in.
The first is a past drinker who always got ill.
The second a Christian who believes God will punish him.

Both are hedonists and for the same reason. Seek pleasure and avoid pain.

[info]ilpalazzo

That's a good example, but I always figured that the 'seeking pleasure' was kind of the defining characteristic of a hedonist and that example is all about the standard avoidance of suffering that almost everybody does.

But aren't those both just avoiding pain?

Poor social_retard. I loved the way he apologised for not been able to express what he wanted to say. He almost sounded wistful when he related that he had the same problem in real life. Please do not ask me to find the links; my brain lost enough cells reading every comment earlier.

Dammit, social_retard made me get a throbbing vein in my forehead at the sight of Calvin and Hobbes. That's not fair. D:

(Also, I don't know what this dude would do if he knew that my family, my parents, and my grandparents on one side are/were all atheists. He seems to think it's a recent social trend or something.)

Heh. The first time I met my best friend (then a Jehovah's Witness), she tried to convince me I was an amoral heathen because I'm athiest. We soon become fast friends.

...and she's now converted to Paganism.

How...do you ever get the feeling that someone, by their very existance, makes the entire human race lose a couple of collective IQ points?

Many atheists exist without committing random acts of immorality ---> therefore, it is possible to be both moral, and atheist.

I can see a discussion over whether the word amoral can apply, if morality is a purely religious concept (and the rest of us would then have ethics) but that all atheists are evil? When there are a lot of not-evil atheists wandering about? *Brain splodey*

If religion leads to morals, then why are *some* (only a small some) priests pedophiles?

Obviously they are not real believing priests, they are merely athiests which have infiltrated the church and deviously manipulated their ill-won position for their own gain. They must be, because they can't be religious and immoral at the same time! It's just not possible!

On a less snarky but more cynical note, this is exactly why people in these positions can get away with so much of what they do for so long -- because people in the community will simply refuse to believe that it's possible, and deny any and all evidence to the contrary, especially evidence so unreliable as the testimony of non-authority-figure children!

And if religion leads to morals, how do tragedies like this one happen?

I may be an amoral hedonist, but at least I've never beaten and abused a child and let him die from pneumonia.

Don't you know? It's not worship/religion unless there's a Sky Daddy involved. Everything else is just shamanism and animism or, if feeling charitable, 'philosophy.'

[info]meowmeowbutt: You can be spiritual without being religious.

[info]_social_retard_: Yeah but then your not an athiest are you?

[info]meowmeowbutt: Spirituality - a sense of connection to the universe
Religion - an organized system of worship that gives a framework to the relationship we have with the universe and with a higher power (diety/ies)
Atheism is the disbelief in the existence of any deities.
You can have both, and you can have one or the other.

[info]_social_retard_: Your saying you can be spirtual and athistic at the same time? strictly speaking yuo are correct. But generaly speaking athiest disbeleave anything supernatural.

[info]meowmeowbutt: The universe is supernatural? oh.

:D I just had to share.
