The argument about the Pledge of Allegiance brought to mind the words that the immigrant child in "The Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson" by Betty Bao Lord thought she was supposed to be saying: I pledge a lesson to the frog of the United States of America and to the wee puppet for witches' hands. One Asian, in the vestibule, with little tea and wee rice for all. My kids loved that and I'm pretty sure it's what they recited in school. Which meant they were probably the only kids in the class who were thinking about the words at all. Post a comment in response: |
