Won't someone think of the CHILDREN?!
I come bearing more Lede wank. Today, the Lede posts about how the kids of today are getting an eyeful of pr0n online:

It will probably come as no surprise to most Internet users that a new survey, published in the February issue of the journal Pediatrics (an abstract is available here), found that nearly half of all young people reported exposure, intentional or otherwise, to online pornography.

Forty-two percent of the 1,500 youngsters (ages 10 to 17) who were surveyed by telephone between March and June 2006 reported such exposure. Two-thirds of those who were exposed said the exposure was “unwanted,” according to the study; the exposure occurred most often when using file-sharing programs to download images.
The very first poster in the comment thread brings the wank:
This problem would be easy to solve if mom’s behaved like moms by taking proper care of their children. Children need close parental supervision, particularly maternal, all the way through high school. They don’t get it when mom’s off working full time and returning home so tired she just wants to chill out.
And they're off!
Wow Mark- You sure feel threatened by working women… “Beats me why women think having a career is such a big deal”… How stupid are you? Your question is the same a women asking men why we need to have a career? Why don’t you stay at home and take care of kids?
And that's just the beginning.

By a show of hands, how many of us had our first pr0n experience due to our parents (or some other adult) leaving it out in the open for us to find?

*raises hand* In the bathroom at my dad's office (he's a bigwig, so it was a private bathroom) he had Penthouse. My brother tore off a page and carried it around in is pocket for like a week.

Does "Sex and the Pregnant Woman" count?

(I might be getting the title wrong, but it was definitely along those lines. The illustrations: think Joy of Sex, but add a baby-bump to the hairy hippie chick. My parents had this just sitting on the bookshelves with the other baby books. WAUGH.)

My parents were very open about this stuff, I got to see scenes on TV an' stuff.

Yet if I mention the fact that there is pr0n on my laptop (hey, it keeps my share ratio up... whut?) my mother throws a hissy fit, I really don't get it??*

*Especially when you take in to account that I'm 26, and therefore it is my God given right to watch pr0n if I so choose. I went to a convent school, I should know.

Hmm...visual porn, no. Softcore romance-novel-type porn? YES.

When I was eight, my dad's coworker's daughter went off to college, and I got a whole bunch of her crap, including a crate of Sweet Valley High books, which I DEVOURED. Admittedly there is no actual sex in those, just boob gropage.

Then when I was ten I found Gramma's romance novel stash.
Yeah.

My dad's girlfriend's Harlequin romances, and then my mom's Red Shoe Diaries rentals and high-art erotica. At least it was mostly tasteful stuff.

Does getting the "This is what a penis looks/feels like" chat complete with samples of your mother's toy collection count?

Wouldn't have been so bad were the specific one in question not as big as my forearm.

Of course, there was always the discovery of dad's vast collection of hardcore bondage porn to add to the trauma.

Lprchn.

Oh, the shock wave that went around the Singe family when a hand-carved wooden dildo (What's this stick for?) and a pack of dirty early-1900's playing cards was found buried in an old family shed. The grandparents blamed a dead great-aunt. How conveeeenient.

I seem to be in the minority here... *g* My parents either never looked at porn or were REALLY good at hiding it. I actually got my first inadvertent exposure through my brothers (who are 2 years older than me) when I found... interesting IM logs they'd saved.

*hand up*

When I was ten or so, I had to use my aunt and uncle's master bath (rather than the "guest" bathroom) and found a stack of Playboys in a basket of magazines next to the toilet. I spent so long looking at the naked ladies that my mom came and knocked on the door asking if I was sick. Whoops.

Well, probably stashed behind the bedroom couch or up out of reach on the tape shelf doesn't count as 'out in the open.' I was one of those kids that waits for their parents to leave the house then goes and digs around in everything out of sheer curiosity. My sister and I found a tape marked 'Cinderella' that way and rewound to try to get to it, and ended up with an eyeful of boobies from what I can only assume some kind of dressing scene.

But when I was a few years older, I did get a mythological fantasy romance novel from my mother with the advice, "I thought you might like the story; just skip the sex bits," and a distinctly erotica-tinged fantasy novel from my father that I wish I remembered the name of because I rather liked it.

But oh, man, did lemons still come as a shock in my early days of exploring the Sailor Moon fandom.

My dad kept it up in a cabinet, but I was an intrepid and nosy youth. Better Sex videos, some tapes of the Spice Channel and Playboy. All very vanilla. It was at this point that I was able to assign meaning to the "funny feelings". Age: 11.

Me! Dad left a copy of Prison Pussy under his bed. I found it when I crawled under his bed to look for my puppy who had gone missing in the house. I found my puppy, got up and sat on the bed and we looked at it together.

*ponders* Elderly godmom had bodice rippers during childhood. But let's see. First *real* exposure? 12, my stepdad's nephew (who was like in his 30s with all the kids and him living in one room). Found his stash. Which wouldn't have been creepy except he shared with me. *shudders* Looking back on it? Dude was just not right since he had a daughter like three or four years younger than me.
