Crying out justice, but seeking out triumphs (iwanttobeasleep) wrote in [info]otf_wank,

You'll have to forgive me for this one, I didn't witness the commercial or the original site first hand, but it is too perfect.

During the Superbowl, Snickers airs a commercial in which two men accidentally kiss while eating a Snickers bar, and proceed to rip off pieces of chest hair to prove their straightness.

On their website (now removed) they have three other endings for viewers to vote on (one with the two men drinking motor oil and windshield wiper fluid, one with them beating each other up, and one with another man walking in and asking if there's "room for three in this Love Boat"), to be aired during a NASCAR event. They also had reactions of football players from the Colts and the Bears being disgusted and/or amused by the two men accidently kissing (which someone uploaded to YouTube, and the second part).

Naturally, GLAAD was pissed about the obvious/implied homophobia and raised enough noise to get them to take down the site. A popular liberal blog called for the members to spam Mars's (the parent company) with complaints, and a Portland Mercury blogger writes a response to say they're overreacting and misinterpreting.

There's wank in the article comments, there's wank in the YouTube comments, I honestly have no idea where to even start pulling choice wanky comments from.

It's already in the Wikipedia entry. I've got my fingers crossed for wank in the discussion.

Important related news: The Colts' head coach promoted a homophobic fund raiser.

So, they thought that removing their chest hair would make them seem less gay?

Interesting theory.

I guess it's all in the method.

Or something.

I'm a lesbian, actively involved in gay rights campaigns and the like and I'll openly admit I see homophobia EVERYWHERE, even where it isn't (I can't help it!) and I didn't see it in this advert. I laughed. Especially at "I think we just accidentally kissed."

I can see why people see homophobia in the context of presenting the ads on the website with football players (presumably meant to be admired by the target website) doing all the "It's just not right!" stuff. The anti-freeze thing is, otherwise, hysterical.

My thoughts exactly. I'm kinda getting the impression that whoever came up with the ads is not the same person (or group of persons) who decided to post the football players' negativev reactions on the website.

But then again, maybe it is the same person, and they were hoping that the players would rip out their chest hairs/beat themselves up/go diving for the antifreeze themselves. Now that's entertainment.

Y'know what? I'd totally forgotten about the superbowl since (American) football isn't well known out here.

Nice to know that the commericals can still send people into a tizzy.

I LOVED that commercial. And GLAAD is completely missing the point; they were making fun of homophobic people, not promoting homophobia. I mean come on, how are two guys ripping their chest hair out to prove their straightness obviously NOT poking fun at them?

I vote for option three to be aired during NASCAR. Only because I giggle with evil at the thought of Redneck Rage it would induce.*

*I am aware not all people who watch NASCAR are rednecks but, let's admit, it's a sport with an unusually large populace of them.

I don't know which is more amusing: The commercial itself (wish I'd gotten to see the alternates) or the Olympic-level Indignant Point Missing by GLAAD et al.

Ads: Funny, not homophobic, poking fun at homophobes.

Homophobic football players: Morons.

Colts coach: Bigger moron.

GLAAD, Feminist, and the blogosphere in general: Missing the fucking point by a mile and a half.

A couple of the comments on the article about the head coach:

8. GOD BLESS YOU MR. DUNGY. WHEN IS THE LIBERAL MEDIA GOING TO LEARN THAT THE BIBLE EXPLICITLY FORBIDS HOMOSEXUALITY??? ARE THESE "LIBS" WAITING FOR A SMOKING GUN IN TEH FORM OF A MUSHROOM CLOUD FROM JESUS?

10. I didn't know that Jesus had nuclear weaponry. So much better than the word of the Lord!

The fundamental message of the ad:

Manly behavior = Stupid and excruciatingly painful

Oh, and please buy Snickers, okay, guys? Thanks.

The other fundamental message of the ad: Hell, national media coverage? Protests? So cheap at the price.

This might be wierd, but the ad totally reminded me of one of the early live Kids In The Hall sketches that was included on the DVDs as an extra. It's called "fem out" and features two garage mechanics who throughout the course of the sketch become more and more feminine. Then at the the end they are like "Dude, what the fuck just happened?"

In case you have no idea what I'm talking about, like everything else in the world someone has put it on YouTube: http://youtube.com/watch?v=7OOeUR4O4aE

Was discussing this with my fiance and he said that he thought it was pretty funny but could see why some people would get their panties in a twist.

I said, "It would have been better if one of the guys took out another Snickers bar."

Oh, GLAAD. You're so cute. I stopped taking you seriously when your reviewer wetn into such a tizzy over Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back that Kevin Smith ended up putting a note in the end credits assuring all and sundry that no homophobia was intended.

. . . I mean, seriously. Kevin Smith? A homophobe?

The acutal commercial didn't bother me, but the videos of player reactions did. I think they pretty much validated the homophobia when they showed videos of homophobic reactions.

So, the players were grossed out by two men kissing?

Odd, that.

You'd think that a bunch of big strong men who toss a ball to each other from between parted legs while bent over one another -- not to mention big strong men who serve as "tight ends" and "wide receivers" -- would be a little more open to the idea.

That last link....

The argument that "if someone can have the right to be gay, I have the right to disagree with them," makes as much sense as me saying "You may have the right to be a man, but I have the right to disagree with you."

You hear that men? Start wearing dresses, damn it. A bit of make-up would be nice, too.
