In Soviet New York, iPod bans you!
So a state senator in New York wants to ban using iPods while crossing city streets.

USA Today blogs about it. The comments section is a cesspool of wank, mostly of the righteous indignation kind. Watch how liberals are blamed for all society's ills! Marvel at how Darwin is misused over and over again! Gasp as accusations of communism are thrown around carelessly!

The stupid, it had to be shared.

ETA: BE MORE FUNNY, PEOPLE.

While I agree that it is very dangerous to cross a street absolutely oblivious to your surroundings, a fine of $100 seems a bit extreme.

This liberal loves going everywhere wearing her headphones (I don't even take them off when getting food at the dining hall) because, *gasp* you can turn down the volume and still hear everything. I've been more zoned out without them.

It's amazing how much the current conservative government of the US has taken liberties with the freedom of it's citizens, I'm sort of glad people are getting angry when their freedoms are threatened.

Oh wait, they're mad about the liberals and their damn "no ipods when you are crossing the street" law. Yessir, the USA is going to be putting the hammer and sickle on the flag any day now. This is it.

Their goofy rage brings me great joy.

Slashdot also wanks about it. Of course, it would be more of an event if Slashdot didn't wank over something.

Yeah, but what if I'm crossing the street while listening to my iPod on max volume and singing along and doing a little dance—but the walk sign is on and I looked both ways twice before stepping onto the pavement? What qualifies as "tuned out"? (Nevermind that I tend to cross the street as quickly as possible even with my iPod, because I firmly believe that all drivers are playing their own version of Grand Theft Auto.)

Besides, like one poster said, if I am crossing the street at a crosswalk on a green light, then I have right of way, and drivers who want to turn without looking for pedestrians can STFU.

Now, jaywalkers . . . I don't jaywalk as much as I did when I was a kid, and therefore I have no problem if they want to tack on an additional fine for jaywalking while zoned out with gadgets. That could be pretty dangerous.

All of the wanking about Democrats v. Republicans is neither here nor there. The senator in question has also run on Republican and Conservative Party lines and has campaigned for other Republican candidates.
http://blogs.timesunion.com/capitol/?p=3110

I just called the Senator's Brooklyn office and was told that he is in Albany and could not speak to me.

Maybe that is because he is working, at his job in the New York State Senate, which is located in Albany?
The stupid, it is melting my brain. Make it stop.

...Okay. So you can sit down and listen to your iPod, and you can jog and listen to it... but heaven forbid you walk across the street while listening to it?

Is anyone else thinking this may be just a bit difficult to enforce? I mean, what are you going to do, have a cop posted at either end of every intersection in NY and write off tickets to anyone with headphones?

Guys, the law isn't to make things inconvenient for you. It's to keep people from getting killed. If people have been dying, don't you think it's worth a little inconvenience to prevent.

California recently passed a (rather toothless) law against cell phones in cars, and you know what? I and everyone else I know said ABOUT FUCKING TIME.

The wank seems to have gone? Or at least, I don't see the comment link anymore.

But either way, I'd have to think most people commenting haven't spent a lot of time in the city, because there is just no way this would ever be enforced. The cops are too busy on their cell phones to bother.

There should be a ban on people walking four across in a line and taking up the whole sidewalk, though. Ban that! $75 fine!

Say what you like about this issue, but the only time I got hit by a car was when I was walking across the street listening to music on my Walkman. The cops saw that, and figured I was at least 50% at fault for not keeping a proper lookout.

You think walking with ipods is bad? Here in Japan I see teenagers riding their bikes, in miniskirts and stiletto heels, listening to an ipod, holding an umbrella, and sending a text message on their phone. All at once.

And before you ask, no, they aren't wearing helmets.

I know that when I listen to my iPod, I also make sure and add on a blindfold post-haste! And I'd never dream of keeping it at a managable volume!

But what if you pause the music before you cross the street and just leave the headphones in?

Overall, this reminds me of a piece of advice my mom always gives me when I go jogging: "Don't listen to music. You could get raped or kidnapped because you won't hear someone behind you."

But plain old Walkmans are still okay, right?

(What can I say? I'm old skool.)

Ahah. Ahaha. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. I love this. It really does prove that people in my state will elect almost any idiot to a government position.

I mean, if we can't even enforce the ALMIGHTY NO CELLPHONES WHILE DRIVING RULE because most of our police officers couldn't give two fucks in general, how in the hell does this asinine new 'rule' have a chance of working?

If they're banning iPods in crosswalks, then the obvious solution is jaywalk at every opportunity. Duh!

There's no way I'm taking my headphones off. They're the only things keeping my ears from freezing solid and falling off.

Crossing the street in NYC is kind of like being the frog in Frogger. Pretty easy to go SPLAT! Damn cabbies!

So when we're playing GTA with jaywalkers do we now get more points if we hit someone who is jaywalking with an iPod?

Because if not, I'm sticking to the old tactic of going after the people who I think will make the coolest sound against my car.
