In Soviet New York, iPod bans you!
So a state senator in New York wants to ban using iPods while crossing city streets.

USA Today blogs about it. The comments section is a cesspool of wank, mostly of the righteous indignation kind. Watch how liberals are blamed for all society's ills! Marvel at how Darwin is misused over and over again! Gasp as accusations of communism are thrown around carelessly!

The stupid, it had to be shared.

ETA: BE MORE FUNNY, PEOPLE.

Guys, the law isn't to make things inconvenient for you. It's to keep people from getting killed. If people have been dying, don't you think it's worth a little inconvenience to prevent.

California recently passed a (rather toothless) law against cell phones in cars, and you know what? I and everyone else I know said ABOUT FUCKING TIME.

As far as I can tell, this isn't about banning iPods. It's about making it a rule that you can't have them playing when you're crossing the street. You know, just like you can't use them while you're driving a car?<?i> I don't think the concept of public safety around motor vehicles is a new thing, actually.

No. You're far more VULNERABLE to being killed by a car when you're walking. You're not allowed to walk on the freeway just because you feel like it, either. Why? Because no matter how careful you think you are, you could still get killed. This is along the same lines. It's not about restricting your freedom; it's about safeguarding people's lives.

*SIGH* No, genius. CARS can kill people. You can't walk on the freeway either, even though it might be the most convenient route. Because someone could KILL YOU. No matter how careful you are.

Jesus, is listening to your tunes really worth risking your life? If so, risk away. But I wonder how many people would whine and try to sue the city if they get hit by a car while they're having a merry time being oblivious. It happens.

Preach it, sister. I'm tired of all those damn distractions in the car. And now that they've passed a law against cell phones, they can move on to even more distracting things like food and CD players and kids. Anyone with a crying kid in their car? RIGHT IN FUCKING JAIL, BITCH! That'll learn ya to procreate and drive!

Which reminds me: NO MORE SEX IN CARS. EVER. I mean, even if you're not attempting to drive while doing it, you'll just end up remembering it later, and that's very distracting. In fact, you know what, let's just ban people of the opposite gender from ever being in a person's registered vehicle ever. Or the same gender if you're gay. We'd better start putting sexual preferences on driver's licenses. And since I'm bi and therefore not allowed to have anyone else at all in my car again ever (not even asexuals, since I'll just get distracted lusting after them) I guess I should say good-bye to the carpool lane now. Sigh.

On the other hand, though, I'm very much looking forward to eventually getting some federally-mandated driving blinders. FUN!

Yeah, you're right. We shouldn't have any laws at all that get in people's way. People should be allowed to walk on the freeways, because who's to say it's not the most convenient route. And all those folks who die or get injured in car crashes because of things like cell phones? Fuck 'em. We can't pass laws to make driving safe, are they nuts? Let's go one further - let's get rid of the lines in the road and let everyone drive where they want. And let the pedestrians walk among the cars, too. Why should they have to stay on the sidewalks? Yes, partying to music is far more important a consideration than the possibility of getting slammed into next week. Yep. Definitely.

Of course, the folks who get hit should be free to sue the city for not having laws that protect them. That also goes without saying.

But Pui, you forget you don't exist and aren't allowed to be driving, anyway! I mean, people could get really freaked about seeing an empty car just putting along and could plow into pedestrians who are distracted by their iPods while walking down the freeway.

Um, you can still use your cell phone while driving in California but with a headset so that both hands remain on the wheel. At least that what I was told.

But really, considering all the high and mighty we have in CA, I don't see the state saying, "Bannination to cell phones while in a car no mattah what!"

Funny thing? They have proved that driving with a handsfree headset actually increases the odds of having an accident. 'S true. It's because if you're holding something your brain is more likely to attempt to compensate for the distraction, but if you don't have a physical reminder, you kind of assume that you're working at full capacity, when in fact you're not. (They have the same law in Australia and that got proved shortly thereafter -- hasn't changed the law though of course.)

So true! It always makes sense to fine the people who are visible(wearing ipods) instead of the ones actually causing the danger(car drivers who don't pay attention to traffic signs).

Not to mention that the evil iPod-rays kill dozens of baby seals each hour.

The difference between this and the law against cell phones in cars is that, the cell phone ones are meant to protect others from the drivers.
Where as this one? It's attempting to protect people from themselves, and I don't think that's what the legal systems should be for. What are they going to do next?
Ban people from sky diving before they are much more likely to die free falling than if they are walking on the ground? Make it illegal to swim in area with no life guard?
If people choose to do something risky to themselves, they should have the right to do it, so long as it is not endangering others.

I suppose the next step then is to ban deaf people from walking around, since they obviously can't pay enough attention to their surroundings if they can't hear.

Because it's really hard for drivers to look around and watch for, you know, a red light or someone crossing the street or something. Blinders and all.

And before you get started, let me supply it for you: FREEWAYS!!!! FREEWAYS FREEWAYS FREEWAYS yes we know. The law has nothing to do with freeways.
