In Soviet New York, iPod bans you!
So a state senator in New York wants to ban using iPods while crossing city streets.

USA Today blogs about it. The comments section is a cesspool of wank, mostly of the righteous indignation kind. Watch how liberals are blamed for all society's ills! Marvel at how Darwin is misused over and over again! Gasp as accusations of communism are thrown around carelessly!

The stupid, it had to be shared.

ETA: BE MORE FUNNY, PEOPLE.

The wank seems to have gone? Or at least, I don't see the comment link anymore.

But either way, I'd have to think most people commenting haven't spent a lot of time in the city, because there is just no way this would ever be enforced. The cops are too busy on their cell phones to bother.

There should be a ban on people walking four across in a line and taking up the whole sidewalk, though. Ban that! $75 fine!

...and why is it that whenever four people do decide to walk side-by-side, they always seem to walk just. a. little. bit. slower than everyone else?

I propose a minimum speed limit on walking. Anyone who is not disabled has to walk fast, otherwise the rest of us get to trample a bitch they get fined $100.

The stairs near the L train -- at every station, it never fails, and always especially the L -- I practically have to start hitting people with my bag just to make them MOVE. I don't understand, they're not even tourists!

YES. I dunno if it's because I walk fast or have long legs or actually have to be somewhere, but I am constantly frustrated by slow people.

And tourist chunks. They know they should keep moving, and yet they want to look at something, so instead of stepping to one side and looking to their little heart's content they move really really slowly.

Someone should make a video. New York Pedestrian Challenge!

You can always tell the tourists. They're the ones wearing bright clothes, walking slowly and looking up.

Also, when someone has a heart attack on the subway and they have to stop the trains, the tourists are the ones who are actually concerned about the guy's health instead of pissed off about being late getting home. Silly tourists!

Actually, the tourists are generally the ones standing rightthefuckinfrontof the doors when the train pulls in, instead of to the side so that people can actually, yanno, get out.

Never move to Paris, because there Parisians are the ones who stand in front of the doors. Raaah!

As I'm also a Parisian (and therefore an agressive asshat) I take great pleasure in hitting them with my bag when getting off the train.

Hah, when I visited your City everyone warned me that Parisians were rude, rude people.

I'm not sure why they thought I'd care, what with being from London and all. I honestly saw no difference. ;)

Reminds me of everyone warning me about New York City before I visited: people are aggressive, loud, they walk too fast, etc. And this was different from Boston how?

Unfortunately, I was travelling with a group of Florida natives, who had a tendency to lag behind about five blocks.

Walk too fast? How can people walk too fast? Dear god, I wish I could import New Yorkers if that's really true. I'm sick of being stuck behind cow people on the pavement when I'm trying to get somewhere.

Both so true!

I used to work near Times Square. God, I hated that.

If I have nothing better to do, I walk slowly and look up even at home, because the architecture in downtown Washington, D.C. is some of my favourite and I like to look at teh pretty, and people who are in a rush to get somewhere can walk the fuck around me. God knows our sidewalks are huge enough. I don't do it in New York, though, because a) most of the architecture in NY is not really that pretty and b) there are too many people on tiny sidewalks and if you don't look where you are going they will knock you down and step on your kidneys.

Yes, please! Also, it would be great if they could ban the tour bus promotion people who are constantly wandering around where I work and soliciting "riders."

Or the groups of drooling teenagers standing in their little groups gossiping and taking up the whole sidewalk or stopping to go - "OH MY GAAAWWDD SARAH I haven't seen you for a whole 24 hours let's spend 20 minutes squealing over each other in the middle of the sidewalk OMG!!111!"

Some girls even did that on the crosswalk and me a dozen other people missed a green light because of it. I have never wanted to run someone over so bad in my whole life.
