In Soviet New York, iPod bans you!
So a state senator in New York wants to ban using iPods while crossing city streets.

USA Today blogs about it. The comments section is a cesspool of wank, mostly of the righteous indignation kind. Watch how liberals are blamed for all society's ills! Marvel at how Darwin is misused over and over again! Gasp as accusations of communism are thrown around carelessly!

The stupid, it had to be shared.

ETA: BE MORE FUNNY, PEOPLE.

Preach it, sister. I'm tired of all those damn distractions in the car. And now that they've passed a law against cell phones, they can move on to even more distracting things like food and CD players and kids. Anyone with a crying kid in their car? RIGHT IN FUCKING JAIL, BITCH! That'll learn ya to procreate and drive!

Which reminds me: NO MORE SEX IN CARS. EVER. I mean, even if you're not attempting to drive while doing it, you'll just end up remembering it later, and that's very distracting. In fact, you know what, let's just ban people of the opposite gender from ever being in a person's registered vehicle ever. Or the same gender if you're gay. We'd better start putting sexual preferences on driver's licenses. And since I'm bi and therefore not allowed to have anyone else at all in my car again ever (not even asexuals, since I'll just get distracted lusting after them) I guess I should say good-bye to the carpool lane now. Sigh.

On the other hand, though, I'm very much looking forward to eventually getting some federally-mandated driving blinders. FUN!

Yeah, you're right. We shouldn't have any laws at all that get in people's way. People should be allowed to walk on the freeways, because who's to say it's not the most convenient route. And all those folks who die or get injured in car crashes because of things like cell phones? Fuck 'em. We can't pass laws to make driving safe, are they nuts? Let's go one further - let's get rid of the lines in the road and let everyone drive where they want. And let the pedestrians walk among the cars, too. Why should they have to stay on the sidewalks? Yes, partying to music is far more important a consideration than the possibility of getting slammed into next week. Yep. Definitely.

Of course, the folks who get hit should be free to sue the city for not having laws that protect them. That also goes without saying.

Let's mention the freeways example some more, shall we?

Walking on freeways...yeah!
I'm walking on freeways...yeah!
And don't it feel good (especially while listening to your iPod)?

Ummm...you do realize that pedestrians are not allowed on freeways or turnpikes or parkways is because those roadways are not meant to be stopped on(except in the event of a lot of traffic or accident). Pedestrians would cause people to stop, which goes against the specific purpose of those roads.

City streets though, especially in NYC have a speed limit of about 25 MPH and have stop lights...there's no reason that you shouldn't be able to listen to a device while legally crossing the street...otherwise, let's ban talking to the person next to you while walking. I saw someone walk into a hot dog cart while talking to the person next to him.

Volume control. It works wonders on hearing your surroundings.

Now, those assmunches with the noise-cancelling headphones? So had it coming.

But Pui, you forget you don't exist and aren't allowed to be driving, anyway! I mean, people could get really freaked about seeing an empty car just putting along and could plow into pedestrians who are distracted by their iPods while walking down the freeway.

Random tidbit of knowledge: On the Tufts application form, when they ask for your gender, the choices are Male, Female, or Other (please specify).

AWESOME.
