In Soviet New York, iPod bans you!
So a state senator in New York wants to ban using iPods while crossing city streets.

USA Today blogs about it. The comments section is a cesspool of wank, mostly of the righteous indignation kind. Watch how liberals are blamed for all society's ills! Marvel at how Darwin is misused over and over again! Gasp as accusations of communism are thrown around carelessly!

The stupid, it had to be shared.

ETA: BE MORE FUNNY, PEOPLE.

Funny thing? They have proved that driving with a handsfree headset actually increases the odds of having an accident. 'S true. It's because if you're holding something your brain is more likely to attempt to compensate for the distraction, but if you don't have a physical reminder, you kind of assume that you're working at full capacity, when in fact you're not. (They have the same law in Australia and that got proved shortly thereafter -- hasn't changed the law though of course.)

Do you have links for that study? I've had this debate with others and would love to have the ammunition.

Oop, caught out. No, I don't, though I heard it from a reliable source.

Yeah I figured as much, because while holding a phone to your ear you realize your limitations (although some don't and we then wonder what's wrong with them). But you know people, they shan't be denied their cell phones!

Also, your icon is adorable. I like looking at it for long periods of time. It gives me warm fuzzies.

Out of interest, was that study focused on automatic cars? Because I would be extremely surprised if that was true of manuals. (This is apropos of nothing, just curious.)
