In Soviet New York, iPod bans you!
So a state senator in New York wants to ban using iPods while crossing city streets.

USA Today blogs about it. The comments section is a cesspool of wank, mostly of the righteous indignation kind. Watch how liberals are blamed for all society's ills! Marvel at how Darwin is misused over and over again! Gasp as accusations of communism are thrown around carelessly!

The stupid, it had to be shared.

ETA: BE MORE FUNNY, PEOPLE.

Yeah, you're right. We shouldn't have any laws at all that get in people's way. People should be allowed to walk on the freeways, because who's to say it's not the most convenient route. And all those folks who die or get injured in car crashes because of things like cell phones? Fuck 'em. We can't pass laws to make driving safe, are they nuts? Let's go one further - let's get rid of the lines in the road and let everyone drive where they want. And let the pedestrians walk among the cars, too. Why should they have to stay on the sidewalks? Yes, partying to music is far more important a consideration than the possibility of getting slammed into next week. Yep. Definitely.

Of course, the folks who get hit should be free to sue the city for not having laws that protect them. That also goes without saying.

Let's mention the freeways example some more, shall we?

Ummm...you do realize that pedestrians are not allowed on freeways or turnpikes or parkways is because those roadways are not meant to be stopped on(except in the event of a lot of traffic or accident). Pedestrians would cause people to stop, which goes against the specific purpose of those roads.

City streets though, especially in NYC have a speed limit of about 25 MPH and have stop lights...there's no reason that you shouldn't be able to listen to a device while legally crossing the street...otherwise, let's ban talking to the person next to you while walking. I saw someone walk into a hot dog cart while talking to the person next to him.

Volume control. It works wonders on hearing your surroundings.

Now, those assmunches with the noise-cancelling headphones? So had it coming.
