In Soviet New York, iPod bans you!
So a state senator in New York wants to ban using iPods while crossing city streets.

USA Today blogs about it. The comments section is a cesspool of wank, mostly of the righteous indignation kind. Watch how liberals are blamed for all society's ills! Marvel at how Darwin is misused over and over again! Gasp as accusations of communism are thrown around carelessly!

The stupid, it had to be shared.

ETA: BE MORE FUNNY, PEOPLE.

So even should we repeal all the pedestrian laws because people sometimes get hit anyway? Jaywalking should be legal, then. And walking on the freeways. Strolling among the cars on the road if one feels like it.

Nobody says pedestrian laws work 100% of the time. But if there's a new public safety issue, the government has to address it. Every time a law like this is considered, there are people crying about the loss of convenience. But if it helps cut down on fatalities, are you really arguing that it's more important to be able to listen to tunes? Are you serious?

Man, all this talk of freeways gets me hot. I need to take a walk to cool down. Good thing there's a freeway nearby!

If I get hit while wearing my iPod, would you still remember me?

It depends. Will you post to your LJ from the emergency room before you die so that I can show my incredible grief through the gifted application of stutter-typing?

Definitely. I will also be holding up my lighter next to the oxygen tank for an encore.

Way to completely miss my point. That being that it's kind of pointless to ban crossing the street while listening to music because folks would still get hit anyway. I doubt it would do anything significant to cut down on fatalities. Pedestrians not being distracted wouldn't do anything to drivers who are being reckless or not paying attention. One of my best friends was struck by a car a few weeks ago, and guess what? Not listening to music, she obeyed all signs and traffic laws AND STILL GOT HIT ANYWAY.

What the hell does walking on freeways have to do with crossing the street while listening to music, anyway?

Your argument falls apart at "if there's a new public safety issue." Really, I don't think there is. Given the sheer number of people who are wearing iPods all the time on the New York streets, and have been for years now, if they were genuinely creating a greater risk for pedestrians, we'd have seen a really sharp spike in pedestrian deaths during that time. To the best of my knowledge as a resident who keeps up with the news here, we have not seen such a spike. Ergo we don't have a new public safety issue. We have a politican who's extremely eager to make a name for himself by suggesting a quick fix to a non-issue, which is not an uncommon phenomenon.

What is it with you and freeways? Were freeways mean to you in high school or something? The only time I've ever seen someone walking on a freeway was if their car broke down and they had to walk to the next exit to call a tow truck. I don't think it's that common of an occurence.

My Question is, if anyone would like to answer...

When is concern for safety a soley Conservative or Liberal issue? Seriously, people get so caught up in right or left that they're too stupid to realize when some things would benefit everyone regardless of political leanings or view points.

Now, with that said, as an iPod owner, who's aware of her surroundings when it's time to cross the street, most of this boils down to a common sense issue. I'd like to tune out as much as the next person, but I know that streets are nuts. I live along an expressway for God's sake, which had a lot of pedestrian deaths last year. I don't think all of them were wearing iPods.

Remember, with RIGHTS come RESPONSIBILITY! Anyone with kids, please go repeat to them, 800 bajillion times. If a person is complaining that much about their "rights" being taken away, maybe they're too stupid to be let out in the real world.
