I taught one smaller class at a private college and made a deal with my students; they could email their essays to me (only if they unable to make it to class; if their butts were in the seats they had to have an actual copy) and I would reply to let them know I got it. If they didn't get an email back from me, it was likely that I didn't get it, and if they decided to just assume it got to me and go about their business, I'd give them a zero for work not received. I accepted quite a few "late" essays on the days they were due if students forgot or (as commonly happened), the printers in the labs weren't working, because not all students had their own printers or could run all over campus before my 9 am class. I tried to make it balanced and reasonable, and hey—the one student who couldn't make the minimum effort failed.
This chick/guy/whoever needs to put a little balance in her approach.
