Amazon Wank
So it seems that before Christmas Amazon had a DVD offer on boxsets - buy one get one free. Except they made a bit of a mistake and the lowest item was actually taken off twice. This resulted in, if you had two items of the same price, free DVDs.

As will happen people took advantage of this and people discussed whether that was ethical.

Skip forward to December 28th, and Amazon finally realises their error. All customers affected are asked to either return the boxsets unopened, or their credit cards will be charged the total price.

Aaaaand wank results People ask whether it's legal. Some people ring Amazon to complain. And some people sit proclaiming that it's all perfectly fine and serves folk right for taking advantage of it.

Those people disgust me. I wouldn't have taken advantage of that loophole.

Wow. This is one of those where both sides (those who took advantage and those who are being smug in their morality now) are such assholes that I don't know who to root for. Though I can't really blame Amazon on their decision, I guess, since I probably would have done something similar.

I'm sure that's not legal. If you miss label something then you have to sell it at that price, at least that's what I learned working in retail.

Damnit, Amazon.com had a huge sale on DVD boxsets and they didn't tell me? That could have saved me a lot time going to the mall daily to take advantage of Barnes and Noble's sale.

Eh, I wouldn't have taken advantage, I don't think it's honest and besides, the people who did it should have realized Amazon would realize the mistake eventually and try to fix it. Kind of silly for them to be bitching about getting caught.

I'm kinda amused that these people actually thought that Amazon wouldn't charge them the correct amount after they found out about the mistake. I mean, it was more than a little naive of them to honestly think Amazon would just let it be :D

Amusing anecdotes!

Read this on Miss Manners: A lady walked into a grocery store with her receipt. The cashiers were quite busy, so she flagged down a manager who was lurking near the customer service desk.

"Sir," she informed him, "pardon me but there was an error of ten dollars on this order. I only just noticed when I got to my car."
The manager gives the receipt a cursory glance and replies, "All sales are final after leaving the store, sorry, nothing I can do."
"Oh," she says, taken aback, "well, thank you then. The ten dollar mistake was in my favour - you charged me too little."

In Britain, the prices in the shop is an invitation to treat. Which roughly means, if you like the price - you buy. The shopkeeper has no obligation to sell it to you at the price displayed, but once a price has been agreed, it is binding. It’s the same with tenders; I’ve known people who have under-quoted on, say, a building job and had to complete it, absorbing the loss. Offering some people to waive any charge and then charge others, seem a bit arbitrary. They should cut their losses and put in proper controls on their checkouts.

The 54 Order Man must be a total hermit. How the hell can he have 1200 DVDs, watch them, and have a life, let alone afford that many? It's just too sad.

Goddamn it Foxfire. Eating my comments without asking.

Anyway, as I said, I was one of the people that got it that way. I bought Married with Children Season 1 and got a Designing Women and series finale for Dawson's Creek for free. I was sent an email AFTER the package was sent that said if I wanted to send it back they would pay for shipping (yeah fucking right) as well as the refund, or I could keep them and they'd charge the amount they messed up. I didn't find it particularly fair since it wasn't my glitch that messed up, so I sent them back. It just struck me as odd, especially since they canceled a couple of my friend's orders without even telling her. It felt awfully shady to me. The letter in one of the links was the same letter I got, and my friend got several. I just had the one order because I wanted Married with Children and had to fill up the order to get the free shipping. *shakes head*

"Hi, I'd like these two."
"Okay. They're free. Have a nice day, here is your receipt."

~2 days later~

Seriously?

People who think they can cancel credit cards, et'c, especially on large orders, and not have it come back and bite them on the ass are just darling, really, in their cluelessness. Because, first, damned right things get sent to collections, and, even more so, they get stuck on your credit report, possibly as theft by deception. And since credit reports are used as screening devices by everyone from landlords to insurance companies to possible employers, that's a lot to pay for some DVDs.

Also, how come I didn't know, dammit, I'm still short two seasons of Buffy, three of Angel, and all of Farscape, dammit.
