Amazon Wank
So it seems that before Christmas Amazon had a DVD offer on boxsets - buy one get one free. Except they made a bit of a mistake and the lowest item was actually taken off twice. This resulted in, if you had two items of the same price, free DVDs.

As will happen people took advantage of this and people discussed whether that was ethical.

Skip forward to December 28th, and Amazon finally realises their error. All customers affected are asked to either return the boxsets unopened, or their credit cards will be charged the total price.

Aaaaand wank results People ask whether it's legal. Some people ring Amazon to complain. And some people sit proclaiming that it's all perfectly fine and serves folk right for taking advantage of it.

I heartily agree with this suggestion. Lemme try:
Henry, Jane, Edward, and Samantha, my furry white bbs, are poking their heads out of my pant legs right now.
Also, I am juggling doves. Watch them comically crap all over me and fly away from my grasp, one by one! Ta-da!

*Attempts*

A burglar breaks into a house. He sees a CD player that he wants so he takes it. Then he hears a voice "JESUS is watching you". He looks around with his flashlight wandering "What The HELL Was That?". He spots some $ on a table and takes it......Once again he hears a voice " JESUS is watching you". He hides in a corner trying to find where the voice came from. He spots a birdcage with a parrot in it! He goes over and asks " Was that your voice?". It said "YES". He then says "What's your name?". It says "MOSES". The burglar says " What kind of person names his bird moses??" The parrot replys "THE SAME PERSON THAT NAMES HIS ROTWEILER "JESUS".

Considering how much money Amazon MAKES? I would admit to the mistake and let them keep the free DVDs, it would be better for public relations. Then again I work at Home Depot and am constantly annoyed by how anal they are about things, considering it's a huge company that makes millions of dollars a year. Apparently I'm missing something but all I can see is corporate greed.

I have 2 choices: send the CSI Miami DVDs back or admit that I want to pay to see David Caruso put on and take off his sunglasses a million times per episode. WHAT SHALL I DO?

Get therapy. David Caruso is the devil, and can devour your soul THROUGH THE TELEVISION SCREEN.

As unlikely as it may seem sometimes, Greg actually has some taste.

I still haven't figured out how he hasn't had sex with EVERYBODY ON THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT by now. Have they not eyes? Do they not see the pretty?

I wonder how long it's going to be before someone tries to get another free boxset out of this, by paying for their extra one then saying something like that since it's still part of the transaction made during the buy one get one free offer, so since they (eventually) bought two then...

Actually, as I understand it Amazon is only charging them for the boxset they should've been charged for in the first place. The glitch was that people ordered two boxsets and didn't get charged for either of them. So Amazon is saying, "Either pay for the one you were supposed to pay for or send the boxsets back."

Ah! I was thinking that the glitch happened when they ordered three sets at once and the two lowest priced ones cost the same amount.

I think it was my desire to still have faith in humanity making me misunderstand. The people who seriously abused the glitch and are wanking about it biting them in the ass were slightly less disgusting to me when I thought that they at least had to pour a bunch of money into Amazon to get as many as they did.

"Total price" for both boxed sets?

I feel kinda bad for the people that just genuinely went "ooh, buy one box set get one free!" and bought two sets that just happened to cost the same, not intending to screw Amazon over.

Especially since it's "send it back unopened." I know for me Christmas isn't over until every last DVD case has been removed of all restrictive shrink wrap and I bask in the New DVD scent.

Yeah, and especially since there's people like me who probably wouldn't have even noticed their credit card didn't get charged the first time (umm, irresponsible with money? Maybe.)

I think that's a misinterpretation. The email posted to the DVD Talk Forum says, "In reviewing your order placed on 23-Dec-06, we discovered
that due to an error we did not charge you the correct amount for the
items you purchased. According to the terms of the promotion,
purchasing one DVD at the regular price entitled you to a free DVD of
equal or lesser value.
You can view the terms of the promotion here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/A...D=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Because these items have already shipped to you, you can either keep
the items and we will charge you the amount you should have been
charged
or you can return the items - at no cost to you - to
Amazon.com within 30 days. Please note that we can only accept the
return of unopened items in their original condition."

(emphsis mine) That says to me that they're only charging people for one of the boxsets, so everyone is still getting the BOGO deal.

I didn't participate in this nightmare situation, but Amazon and I have a long history of pricing errors. I order, they cancel a few days later, nobody gets hurt. Every once in a great while, something gets through, and I'm happy, and it makes me more inclined to throw orders Amazon's way. I shamelessly exploited the $5 off everything glitch last week, expecting them to cancel my orders. They didn't, I've opened all the stuff, but if they try to charge me the thirty or however many dollars they undercharged, I will beat them to death with my Saved By The Bell DVDs (All 5 seasons! Under $40! How could I not exploit that?!?)

Makes me nostalgic for the early days of e-commerce. Time was, you could legitimately get a company to pay you a couple dollars for buying a DVD from them. And then about ten percent of the time, the company would go bankrupt before they actually shipped your stuff. The companies may be all gone now, but they live on in my heart. Reel.com, DVDExpress, and 800.com 4-Eva!

Hmm. This reminds me of when my friend worked for Tesco and found out that packs of bacon were ringing up as 1p, and instead of telling the manager texted everyone they knew to get them to come down and buy all the bacon!

Ethics, what ethics?
