Amazon Wank
So it seems that before Christmas Amazon had a DVD offer on boxsets - buy one get one free. Except they made a bit of a mistake and the lowest item was actually taken off twice. This resulted in, if you had two items of the same price, free DVDs.

As will happen people took advantage of this and people discussed whether that was ethical.

Skip forward to December 28th, and Amazon finally realises their error. All customers affected are asked to either return the boxsets unopened, or their credit cards will be charged the total price.

Aaaaand wank results People ask whether it's legal. Some people ring Amazon to complain. And some people sit proclaiming that it's all perfectly fine and serves folk right for taking advantage of it.

In Britain, the prices in the shop is an invitation to treat. Which roughly means, if you like the price - you buy. The shopkeeper has no obligation to sell it to you at the price displayed, but once a price has been agreed, it is binding. It’s the same with tenders; I’ve known people who have under-quoted on, say, a building job and had to complete it, absorbing the loss. Offering some people to waive any charge and then charge others, seem a bit arbitrary. They should cut their losses and put in proper controls on their checkouts.

The 54 Order Man must be a total hermit. How the hell can he have 1200 DVDs, watch them, and have a life, let alone afford that many? It's just too sad.

He's probably sold them to make an easy buck.

He said he didn’t get any duplicates, only the DVDs he wanted to watch, and that he’s still got them. Please see the last linked threads.

Sorry, I don't believe that.

What, that he didn’t buy 54 DVDs?

I would guess the "only ones he wanted to watch" part. And don't forget that those are DVD sets, assuming four dvds for a sitcom season and six for a drama season, that's actually around 270 DVDs.

So, (working on 6 weeks timescale) if he’s now watched them all - that would have taken about 405 hours, give 336 for sleep, 126 for putting food in microwave/ordering pizza, 84 on the toilet/washing, leaves 57 hours free time. I didn’t factor in any time for the special discs with the extras on it. Then of course there’s that wonderful 1200 collection he already had, which he will need to review a few occasionally. I am seriously concerned for this guy.

Firefox ate my “/deliberately thick” end comment above.

I recently counted my DVD box sets, and I'm up to 24, not including anime and the few at my parents' houses, 30 if you split the entire series of Buffy into it's seven seasons. Now, I don't claim to have a significant social life (and much of it does involve watching said sets with my friends), but I do manage to go to classes and do homework, and watch the bunch of them several times over. I also watch far less live TV, and I don't waste my time/money with movies, so it's just a matter of how you budget your time.

Sure, but did you accrue that number over a single holiday season? If he's not selling them, he's certainly stockpiling in case of a nuclear holocaust.
