Amazon Wank
So it seems that before Christmas Amazon had a DVD offer on boxsets - buy one get one free. Except they made a bit of a mistake and the lowest item was actually taken off twice. This resulted in, if you had two items of the same price, free DVDs.

As will happen people took advantage of this and people discussed whether that was ethical.

Skip forward to December 28th, and Amazon finally realises their error. All customers affected are asked to either return the boxsets unopened, or their credit cards will be charged the total price.

Aaaaand wank results People ask whether it's legal. Some people ring Amazon to complain. And some people sit proclaiming that it's all perfectly fine and serves folk right for taking advantage of it.

A worthy distinction between 'ass' and 'slightly lesser degree of ass, comparatively speaking'.

And then, of course, there's motive -- "hey, Amazon made a clear error that I can exploit for my own gain!" vs. "let's use a homophobic, misogynist, racist organization's policies against itself."

I'm afraid I might give the impression I care whatever about either situation, but now I've got to say--I'm hardly Focus on Hating Everything's target audience, if you will, being a gay liberal atheist who avoids children whenever possible, but there are channels toward protest and counteraction that do not involve compromising one's own ethical integrity for petty results? I mean, I suppose for some people the organisation's sheer repugnance outweighs the crassness of exploiting a good-faith policy for spite or personal gain to the detriment of others, but it's sinking to a particular level I'm not sure they're worth, myself.

Your icon does things to me.

Your icon does things to me.

I'd like to say the same thing about yours.

I suffer from a rare debilitating condition that I sort of space out and smile in a particular way whenever Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry are sexy at each other.

Given the kind of things available on the site, "personal gain" wasn't particularly a factor, unless the people participating were gagging for how-to manuals on how to beat individuality and homosexuality out of children and so forth. There's also something of a difference between a good-faith policy and a policy that allows an obscenely rich, powerful organization with a direct line to the president of the U.S. to keep its tax exempt status.

"Ethical integrity" is a matter of interpretation, I suppose.

I was given to understand most people were using it to score Narnia DVDs and recordings, but whatevs; one person's guerrilla tactics, another person's idea of bad taste. I'm not very invested in where other people stick their ethics, I'm just here to point and use icons.
