Things Get Shirty on Stupid_Free
... when a post about an 18 year old trying to get pregnant with her 28 year old fiance hits the comm. Cue lots and lots and LOTS of offensive and defensive wank about teenage pregnancy and/or marriage and/or age differences in relationships, with some squicky/hilarious/startlingly-thoughtful results.

This thread, featuring a man who met and was attracted to his girlfriend when she was 13 is especially creepy. We get aaaaaaaaall the interesting ones of LJ, donchaknow!

Also, it was skeevy. D:

Everytime one of these "age debates" pops up, I can't help but wonder how many of the people who are all squicked out write fanfiction with pairings that would be equally squicky in their eyes IRL.

I'm weird like that.

Yeah, the guy who started dating his girlfriend when she was 13 comes off as someone who doesn't really think what he did was completely okak to me. A lot of it has to do with the way he keeps avoiding some questions and the copious amounts of bad justification for his actions. The whole situation just sounds so skeezy.

"her 28 year old fiancee" confused the heck out of me at first. How could an 18-year-old be stupid enough to think that woman-on-woman sex could produce offspring? This puzzled me for half a second, then I concluded that you meant "fiance" which made it all make sense.

I like my first version better, though.

Oh, hell no.

*Personal anecdote time*

1. I work with 13 year olds. I'm not a fan of generalisations, but none of them are mature/developed/whatever other words he used to have a relationship with someone in their twenties. No. Fucking. Way. They do not, in fact, look like they are 20 years old either, however hard and fast puberty has hit. They have not had the life experience of a 20 year old, they do not have the interpersonal skills of a 20 year old and they sure as hell do not have enough understanding of sex to be having it.

However advanced a 13 year old is, it will not change the fact that they are 13. Really, none of them will have the answer for, "Okay, I don't care if you do your homework. Do it or your subject teacher will give you a detention, your choice."

2. I had a relationship with an older guy when I was 13. Paedophile. Yeah, he didn't technically co-erce me into anything, but that isn't the point; I didn't have the knowledge to realise the situation was wrong. I thought I was a girl and her boyfriend, because 13 year olds are dumb. And if he hadn't broken up with me, I'm sure I'd still be hero-worshipping him with a warped mind to this very day.

3. He *actually* tells people about this on the internet?!

When people turn 18, I stop caring how much older their SO is. Seriously. I don't know them, I can't judge their level of maturity and emotional compatibility. That's not my place.

However, the ah... 13-yr-old thing? That's a little weird.

As for the 13-year-old - well, some people that young do look/act older. The "5 years of menstruation" was a big clue that she probably did look more like 18 than 13. But for chrissakes, leave them alone until they're of age. Otherwise, (general) you are an idiot.

You know, I can't seem to be able to read anything except the skeevy adult finding the 13-year-old interesting, as in dateable. Just, no. My little brother was 13 a couple years ago and if one of my friends had wanted to date him, I'd have to kill them and bury them in the backyard with the psychotic dog. *shudders* We're a little less than nine years apart, and just, yuck.

Hell, I want to kick one of my online friend's boyfriend's ass for knocking up a 16-year-old when he's 19. And not for the first time.

You know? I really try not to think too-much of people in the internet I don't know/talk to, since, you know. I don't know them/can't know how it was and all. So I'm trying to give this dude with the my-sweetheart-was-13-years-old-when-I-was-24 kid the benefit of doubt. Their relationship could've been the most platonic of relationships ever and all, and, really; if it WAS creepy, I want to believe that the girl's family would've done something (yes, sometimes I have too much faith in humanity, why do you ask?)

That said, I'm trying to think of my 12-years-old-sister meeting someone eleven years older than her, someone that would like to date her... and my dad WOULDN'T have something left of that person after I was done with him for trying to get close to my sister before she was AT LEAST sixteen years old.

Before I even read what people say - my Dad met my Mum when she was thirteen and he was twenty. She didn't LOOK thirteen at all cause she is half Maltese and had bazoombas like WOAH. They were penpals till she was legal (cause Dad was travelling around, was just checking out the world till he dedided he wanted to stay in Australia for good).

Mum got pregnant with her first child at eighteen. Over forty years later, they are still married and still very much in love. In this particular situation, it's not creepy or wrong because not only was in the sixties, but Mum didn't look her age.

You can hand me a towel if you want, I was just saying - things aren't always cut and dried.

I run a small group of high school girls with my church, so I see and interact with 14-18 year olds on a pretty consistent basis. I'll agree that some of the students ARE pretty mature - in looks and behavior, but that's probably every 1/250. And still I have to say it is IMPOSSIBLE to be emotionally ready to have a relationship of the kind he is purporting. Sure she may have been able to talk about microbiology and Rocky Horror, but that doesn't make her mature - that means she had an older brother or father who exposed to her something other than N'sync and Algebra 1. I was reading theology and apologetics in high school - but at the same time was devouring Sweet Valley High. It made me diverse, not mature. The truth of the matter is that a 13 year old can't process that serious of a relationship at that time even though she thinks she can - at some point as an adult she'll probably realize that she wasn't as mature she thought she was/ wanted to be.

And that's when she'll look at her 13 year old self and remember what a naive, inexperienced little twerp she was and how her current boyfriend still wanted to be with her. And she'll probably throw up.
