Bad service in the ER?
[info]traumawolfe posts a list of Rules of the ER in [info]customers_suck. Complaints start at the first comment, where it is pointed out that s/he ripped off the list from another site. People also point out, at various points and in various ways, that some of the demands/complaints are irrational. Many personal anecdotes are invoked on both sides and I learn more about hemorrhoids than I wanted to.

Others defend the OP and there is discussion of exactly how bitchy a patient is allowed to be.

Eventually, the OP deletes her journal, but the post remains.

[info]stella4809 makes an off-topic post over here and people complain there as well.

Yes, because comparing one's healthcare provider to one's waitress is a perfectly cromulent acceptable analogy.

I wonder if this means I can sue bad waitresses for malpractice now?

Even though the OP is copypasta, rendering the whole post moot (imho), I still like that response there.

I reserve the right to bitch about the service if I CAN'T go home. See also "why I will never ever speak of my suicidal impulses again". Why, no, I don't appreciate being hauled in as if my very life depends on me being supervised and then... being left to rot. For six hours. In which I could have easily done myself some serious harm using the equipment in the room.

The list in the back room of the ER I work in is much better anyway. :)

Honestly..it was hard to sit on my hands on this one. I know myself, the nurses and doctors bitch and complain about patients, and at the end of the day we really do want to say some of those things..but would we? No. Never. Sick people are sick people.

And I should wipe up a bit now.

11) If you are well enough to complain about the wait, you are well enough to go home.

Someone please explain the logic to this one? I can think of plenty of situations (some experienced first-hand) where the wait would, you know, just exacerbate the sensation of HOLYSHITPAIN you happen to be feeling.

Sitting on my hands re: diabetic control being simply a matter of following the rules perfectly (HA! I wish!) and also ERs in general, due to some Very Bad Experiences about post traumatic pain complaints being ascribed to drug seeking when in fact one was a broken pelvis (the ER doc made my friend stand up, without taking Xrays, which broke his pelvis more thoroughly, demanding surgery and put him in Harborview for three weeks at taxpayer expense) and multiple vertebral fractures (my dear Uncle went to the ER because his regular doc was spending Christmas in Hawaii; they gave him 800mg Ibuprophen and treatment was delayed for a week).

I rather think anyone over the age of twenty has comparable "The ER decided someone was faking and they ended up worse" but, yeah, spooge, whatever.

One time a few years ago (on the Canadian Thanksgiving actually) my aunt had to be rushed to the ER when she hurt her hand while we were taking the docks out of the lake at my cottage. They made her wait for hours while they handled drunks and druggies thinking she was just over exaggerating the injury (because apparently even though she had worked at another hospital for 40 years she didn't know the difference between a sprain wrist and broken hand).

When they finally took at look at her hand they realized it was the worst hand brake that hospital had ever seen (to heal it took about three times the length of a normal broken hand) and ended up rushing her into surgery, while wondering how she managed to put up with the pain (which she had been complaining about for hours but they ignored her while they dealt with the drunks).

I fully admit I despise ever having to go to the ER. The three times I've been sent (emergency tonsilectomy, car wreck, being hit by a car), I wanted to kill the nursing staff for various reasons, the biggie being the bitch who rooted around in my arm with a needle trying to hit a vein without pulling it out (presumably because she didn't want to have to get another). When I was three.

And now I am more thankful than ever that I have never had a bad doctor I can recall.

I had all of one bad resident, who didn't write anything down, treated me as if I were a dumb little girl, and was generally annoying the life from me. Then - oh - then the physician asked him very cheerfully where his notes were. She then did the 'check=up run-down' with me instead of him, and he looked incredibly lost.

Sweet.

Hopefully, he got a clue, or he ain't gonna make it at that hospital.

Every time I've been to the ER, it's been a completely traumatic experience. The last time, I went in after I'd been in a car accident and my neck was in so much pain I couldn't move - I waited an hour and a half, was given some painkillers, and sent home. My request for x-rays and a second opinion was (repeatedly) denied and I was more or less shoved out the door. My father's chiropractor eventually did the x-trays for free and discovered I had some intense damage in my spine. Last month I had pneumonia, but sucked it up and went into my campus' health center vs the ER because I knew I wouldn't get help at an ER.

ugh, the ER. I really hate how they run things. The few times I've been in the ER were never fun. They kept me there in a bed for hours after a car accident when I only had some bruising from my seatbelt. Another time they kept me in the waiting room for two hours while I slowly swelled up like a balloon, and only helped me after it got to the point where my fingers were too puffy to bend.

I also have a beef with doctors in general. It took them almost a year to figure out that I had Polysystic Ovarian Syndrome, and during that year I "had" everything from pregnancy to cancer. It was such a stressful time that I actually got some grey hairs from it, and I was fifteen at the time. Definitely not fun, especially all the glares I got from old ladies at the OBGYN and all the lies I had to tell my friends about why I was missing so much school.

Not disagreeing with the substance of your comment, but that's not factually correct and it weakens your argument to claim it. According to the Census Bureau (you can find the data here) there's about 45 million uninsured individuals in the US as of late 2005. With an approximate population of 293 million, that's about 15% of the population, far from a majority as I'm sure you'll agree.

Because having medical coverage automatically means it's *good* medical coverage, amirite?

That makes me want to post my own list. It would look something like this:

1. Just because I don't look that sick doesn't mean I'm not sick.

2. Giving me Vicodin and sending me home just to get me out of your hair will not make me suddenly well.

3. It's possible for someone to be in so much pain that Vicodin doesn't cut it. This should be your clue that something is actually wrong.

4. Giving me a prescription for a bigger bottle of Vicodin and sending me home just to get me out of your hair still won't make me well.

5. I'll be back tomorrow, and the day after that and the day after that until someone finally gets it through their skull that I'm very ill and I need surgery before things turn really ugly and possibly kill me.

*wipes up*
