Bad service in the ER?
[info]traumawolfe posts a list of Rules of the ER in [info]customers_suck. Complaints start at the first comment, where it is pointed out that s/he ripped off the list from another site. People also point out, at various points and in various ways, that some of the demands/complaints are irrational. Many personal anecdotes are invoked on both sides and I learn more about hemorrhoids than I wanted to.

Others defend the OP and there is discussion of exactly how bitchy a patient is allowed to be.

Eventually, the OP deletes her journal, but the post remains.

[info]stella4809 makes an off-topic post over here and people complain there as well.

Even though the OP is copypasta, rendering the whole post moot (imho), I still like that response there.

The majority of people in the US do not have health insurance. This isn't some oversight born of ignorance or laziness on their part but a sad fact of the American healthcare system. Unless you are fortunate enough to work for a company that provides health insurance, or you are well-off (and, ironically, healthy) enough to pay for it out-of-pocket, chances are you do not have health insurance. This is one of the main reasons why so many people end up in the ER, and while I'll agree that some of these people don't seem all that sick, they aren't there for fun.

I've said it before, but I don't think it can be said enough, I love the NHS!!

Hurray!

People bitch and bitch about the NHS but my love for it will never die.

I once ripped my toe open so badly it looked like a little pink muppet that talked if you bent the toe back and forth. It was 2 in the morning and I was bleeding everywhere, so I went to the emergency room. Total bill for having the wound washed, x-rayed and bandaged? $860. The doctors were rude and incompetent and treated me like a moron.

God save that snaggle-toothed old Queen.

Forgot to add that this nastiness took place in Nebraska. I am jealous of other nations' health care.

How I pine for an NHS. PINE, I tells ya.

(I once got into an argument with a Swedish transfer student who was bitching about Sweden's, and saying that she thought the American system was better. The long and short of her argument was, "Well, I'M from a wealthy family and can afford good health insurance, fuck all y'all who can't.")

I had a flatmate who thought like that - he was adamant that things like National Insurance contributions were theft, because he had private health insurance, and people that couldn't afford private care were slackers who deserved what they got. As at the time I was having some pretty nasty joint problems and I couldn't afford the physio that made me able to eat and dress myself without crying in pain, this was the cause of many arguments in that house.

The NHS is in an atrocious state, but I wouldn't trade systems for the world.

Oh, I know people like that. Fuck them. If it weren't for the NHS, I'd be dead or bankrupt by now. And my sister's arm would be paralysed. The system is pretty screwed, yeah, but it's better than nothing.

I'm from Sweden, so that student made me go "WTF" until I got to the "wealthy family" part. *headdesks* Sure, the Swedish system can be better... but it WORKS, and I prefer it from what I've heard about the American system.

Did she have ANY other reason for disliking the Swedish system? (Also, please tell me you hit her?)

The closest I get to patriotism is when I hear Americans talking about their health care system. Fair puts my bitching about prescription charges into perspective.

Best response to that one is, "You've lived in the real world, haven't you?"

That response definitely wins. It makes up for all the "America NEEDS NO UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE OMG" wank I've seen around recently. And! It was coherent! And gave valid examples! Oh internet, I hardly know you!
