Lazy Cripples and the Workers Who Hate Them
[info]juniorfan29 oh-so-innocently bitches in [info]customers_suck about people who have the gall to shop in wheelchairs without planning ahead. Or bringing along a hired nurse. [info]shadowsync, meanwhile, doesn't know why they have such trouble; as long as the handicapped belong to a church and have the internet, things are taken care of since they all have good health insurance. [info]zannechaos is trying to pin the blame on the liability issue and is less insulting about it than the OP, but doesn't stay out of the Trenton Tarpits of Wank by any means. [info]angriestgirl, in a fit of pique, declares that she has "lost interest in this little cockfight already," but comments not two minutes later about slang being invalid in text.

In case it gets deleted: Dear lady in a wheelchair:

If you are going to be out shopping, then you either need to be able to get yourself in and out of your wheelchair, or you need to bring someone along with you that can help you. Luckily you were able to find another stupid and guillible customer to help you today, because although one of our employees was stupid enough to help you the other day...we WILL NOT be helping you in and out of your car/wheelchair any longer.

No love,
juniorfan29

I wouldn't be stupid enough to not make arrangements for someone to help me, rather than assume that the employees of a store are going to risk a lawsuit to come out and put me in a wheelchair.

I'd post it to clairvoyant, but I don't have to lick a wall socket to know it'll hurt, and neither do I have to wonder if this is going to turn into a screaming, frothy, Santorum-laden mess in about an hour. (ETA: And gosh, look at that! Didn't even take that long.)

ETA: Dang, bahleeted. And just when we were getting to the funny parts - the flouncing, the grammar wank, the "you don't know the history of nursing! I do!" wank. Rats.

. . . Buh?

One of my closest friends needs a wheelchair most days. On her behalf, I want to bitchslap this guy, but I won't.

Mostly because I know when she sees this, she'll come up with something far worse.

I haven't been able to get my own EZ-Cheese in the supermarket since August, so I'm feeling a small portion of that pain.

I get what she's saying about liability - but she's saying it and blaming the person in the wheelchair, like it's a personal failing that there aren't any good accessibility options in this case. And if there's a problem? Hey, just bring along the nurse that comes free with every disability!

I want my nurse to be George Takei.

For what it's worth, I thought the "Hey, sweetie, since you're such a flaming idiot, I thought you might like to know that 'lemme' isn't a word, but I bet you're just so smart you already knew that, huh?"* was amusing.

Guilty of the grammar wank. But come on - a bunch of cranky cf hardcore anime junkie BFFs trying to draw me into a flame war - what the hell am I going to do? It's not like I would actually bother arguing with them.

There's a kickass lady that comes into my supermarket sometimes. She has NO ARMS OR LEGS. Mosttimes she brings her help along, but she is only semi-assisted living (probably by choice) so sometimes one of us will go around and pick up her shopping for her. She is deeply cool, and I still feel mild guilt for being so small I could not carry more than two bottles of coke.

Ah, [info]juniorfan29, as if we had any remaining doubts that you are, in fact, an idiot. Not only are you a raving homophobe, you also think the disabled are out to make your life harder for you. Aww. Poor thing.

Along with the able-bodied entitled who take up the disabled parking spaces for their own convenience, may she, too, one day know all the wonders of being in a wheelchair -- having to navigate narrow, cramped aisles, having to rely on kind strangers to get products off too-high shelves, hoping that you'll be able to get into the building once you get there, having people assume that being in a wheelchair means you're also mentally deficient.

Wow. I work at a Brookstone whose total square footage is about the size of my living/dining area and jam-packed with merchandise and displays. We get customers in wheelchairs quite frequently, with and without nurses. It's never occurred to me to be annoyed at them for something that, yanno, ain't their fault. Guess that makes too dumb to know better or something.

Aw, it must suck to be in a wheelchair. That's why I always jump forward and go "OH HAY WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO OPEN THE DOOR FOR YOU?"

No matter how lame and ineffectual I may be at running my own life, it's nice to know that just by having feet I can make the world a little bit more congenial for someone else.

During my time in retail, I never thought anything of helping any customer with getting things be it they're in a wheelchair or such. Probably because since I'm short, I do sympathise with those who have trouble reaching.

However as far as juniorfan goes, I still know plenty of former co-workers who are in wheelchairs permanently due to spinal injuries or lost limbs who'd still be able to whup his/her ass without a problem.

I saw what they did to the guy who wrongly parked in a handicapped spot...it was enough to scare me.

This bit killed me:

then you either need to be able to get yourself in and out of your wheelchair

Do I need to point out that this woman might have MOBILITY ISSUES and thus may not be able to actually get out of her wheelchair? Sometimes, when people are in wheelchairs, they use them to get around, as they may be unable to, I don't know, walk or stand. I know that if I were in a wheelchair and if someone asked me, "Can't you stand?" I might try to do so...in order to kick their face in.

The dumb, it is strong with this one. D:

Wow. You know, I could understand being pissed off at a customer with entitlement issues who just happened to be in a wheelchair. But getting mad at a customer who needed assistance? Umm... Where I work, at least, that's sort of the job. Helping the customers.

Now if there's a liability issue involved with giving someone a hand, as in "my company doesn't want us to touch the customers so we don't get sued" then yeah, she's in a rough position, but that's still not a reason to hate on the customer.
