It's the Live Music Capitol of the World, not the Live Wank Capitol
Austin, TX plays host to the SXSW Interactive/Film/Music festival every year. Of late, the Music festival has become particularly high-profile, and very popular among the general public as well as music industry wonks. SXSW Music has, for some time, made a practice of selling admissions wristbands to Austin locals, which grant the bearer admission to the evening concerts (provided they aren't already packed to the ceiling with badgeholding festival attendees).

Understandably, the wristbands have become hot commodities for scalpers, and this year the festival organizers decided to do something about it to reduce the problem. They didn't announce the date the wristbands would go on sale, and the only way you could find out about the sale was by signing up for the SXSW text messaging service, which would send out a message to all subscribers' cellphones the minute the sale started.

The magic text message went out on Monday morning, and within moments Waterloo Records was beseiged by hundreds of hipsters. (Full disclosure: I was one of them and waited in the sun for two hours; I picked a hell of a day to wear a black t-shirt and my heaviest pair of jeans.) The weblog Austinist posted a photograph from the event, showing Austin Chronicle editor and SXSW organizer Louis Black watching people file in to get their wristbands.

The wank began in the comments thread instantly:

The epitome of "fat & happy," no?
Oh, and smug, neurotic and narcissistic.
I thought this festival wasn't for the consumers, Louis. Why even sell wristbands? Oh, yea, to make close to $1,000,000 from people for whom the festival is not.
And it got nastier from there. Well then, don't go, you idiot. SXSW is a industry event; be glad they want the community to attend. Bullshit, they're a bunch of money-grubbers. Louis Black fires back. What? That can't be Louis! Yes it was! And on. And on. And on.

And then, since apparently firing back in the comments wasn't enough, Black went after Austinist again in his column in the Chronicle this week.
One of the things I've affirmed, as I expected, is that I'm pretty much a villain -- a role I was born to play. Now, I would point out that many of the things attributed to me are actually the creative contribution or under the control of others, but in this context it would just look like I was trying to shift the blame.

As interesting as it is to have the dialogue opened up, there are also serious drawbacks. Assumptions, unaccompanied by even the most rudimentary research, are as facts. Even when such statements are clearly put forth as merely conjecture, the writers frequently respect and accept their own authority -- so, in the course of their post, any qualifications are removed.
Yesterday, Austinist followed up, linking to Black's column.

And away they go in the comments again. Industry event, people! Black is still a jackass. Austin is not a mocodity! You whiny bastards don't know how good you've got it. SXSW abuses its volunteers! What, by forcing them?

And it's likely to keep cranking away. Which lends a certain weight to this comment, a riff on the city's unofficial slogan "Keep Austin Weird": "Keep Austin a Town Full of Whiny Pussies".

(I love this town, I really do. I've lived here for years and I like my little island of blue in a big red state. But oh my god the locals here can fap fap fap.)

Seeing Austin wank makes me just a bit homesick, but so happy.

Austinist is a pretty good supply for Austin wank, although this is the biggest one to hit in quite some time. ^_^

On another subject, your icon amuses me hugely.

Well, you know, there's all that batshit from that population under Congress Avenue Bridge that might have something to do with the wank.

I actually have nothing to add...

... Is it sad my first thought was, "At least the gas is cheaper here so you can drive back all the time"?

I love it, but Austin is too big for me. ;.;

Fun thing about gas prices in Austin: The closer you get to the capital building, the lower the gas prices.

At least we have the Spurs, and the Donkey Lady.

Doesn't Teddy Roosevelt hang out in one of the fancy hotels downtown, too? I've heard tales...

Also, I used to have relatives that lived, like, right across from the Ghost Tracks. That place is traffic central at Halloween and any Friday the 13th ever, even though the story about a bus of kids getting hit and killed by a train is a complete lie.

Yup. And when they had a set of haunted tracks on that show Adrian Pasdar was on before Heroes (I'd go look it up, but I've got to get ready for work) the whole city was all "Lookit, it's OUR haunted tracks! We're so cool!" even though from what I've heard most major cities have something similar.

Le sigh.

Like my gramma says, no matter how big San Antonio gets, it'll still be a cowtown. We're just, like, a few giant stadiums, a handfull of historic missions and other sites, and a giant tower away from being Hondo or Kerrville. Every time we're in the national spotlight it's as if the whole city has this collective moment of 'OMGWE'REONTEEVEE!:DDDD'

This makes me sad I've never thought to report Milwaukee's regular wankapoolza around Summerfest time. What is it about music festivals that brings this stuff out in people?

I guess it's like any big convention or gathering, regardless of fandom or purpose. You get that many people together, someone's bound to find something to make a scene over.

See, this is why I miss living in Austin. San Antonio doesn't have nearly this much fappery going on.

Unless it is, of course, Evol City Officals v. Hippies and Fountain Lizards.

They're these near-extinct geko type things that live in the fountains downtown. It's something that comes up every once in a while when city officials bring up the idea of trying to get rid of the lizards. Hippies start waving signs and protesting while the folks on the city council regret even thinking about the lizards.

They might, in fact, be the same thing. I've just always heard them refered to as Fountain Lizards.

And I've just been reminded of all the wankery about the random deer over in the Medical Center area.

Amen to that. I love living here, especially since I grew up in that toxic waste dump on the Gulf Coast known as Houston. Austin is miles better that that. But yes, the locals can get rather wanky at times.

And I don't think I can repeat the comments my former co-workers and I were making during SXSW when I worked on 6th. It was brutal. Heh.

HOORAY AUSTIN WANK!

FWIW, I had a fantastic time wandering around and catching all the free shows (and dollar beer) last year. No need for a wristband. (Then again, I wasn't dead set on any of the headliners.)

I'm enough of a dork that I hit as many free shows as possible, even though I've got a wristband. Which actually works quite well -- I get to see acts during the day that would be unworkably crowded in the evenings.
