That poor cat! Baby is about to twist kitty's ear. When Baby ignores the yowls and growls, kitty will make his displeasure known in a way that Baby can't ignore. Moomie, hearing the screams, will see the blood and demand that the cat be killed, when a few more superficial scratches would teach Baby (See Pavlov, et. al.) that abusing the cat is foolish.
They can tell all that just from looking at the picture? That's some deductive talent. (Or maybe they're psychic?)
