Help, help, I'm being oppressed!
CuteOverload is known for being one of the wankiest places on the internet. Something about adorable animals just drags out the wankers in full force.

A picture is posted of a cat and baby together. Someone apparently childfree feels the need to comment, Ugh! Cute ruined by a sproglet! Ahhhhh!

Naturally, all Hell breaks loose. Forward fly accusations that the baby is ugly, CFers are heartless, and that everyone, on both sides, is being oppressed.

Of course, it's possible to argue that the comments wouldn't have escalated if if it hadn't also been posted to cf_hardcore.

Where's the "IT IS A DAILY STRUGGLE BEING CHILDFREE" icon when you need it?

That poor cat! Baby is about to twist kitty's ear. When Baby ignores the yowls and growls, kitty will make his displeasure known in a way that Baby can't ignore. Moomie, hearing the screams, will see the blood and demand that the cat be killed, when a few more superficial scratches would teach Baby (See Pavlov, et. al.) that abusing the cat is foolish.

They can tell all that just from looking at the picture? That's some deductive talent. (Or maybe they're psychic?)

Plus, doesn't it stand to reason "Moomie" is, ya know, *standing right there* taking the picture? Or at least someone is, who will stop said baby from pulling off the cat's ear and the cat from retaliating? Or did the picture take itself?

You mean pictures don't take themselves? But I thought...!

And how do you know the baby didn't take the picture, using the timer on the camera? Hmm? Babies are crafty like that.

Hey, did you ever read [info]dl_anon in its heyday? Because you might be surprised at what one can tell from just looking at a picture. :-D

Ooh! *totally off-topic* Can anyone kindly give a longterm n00b the basic rundown of *how* and *why* the tinhats thought DM and EW were communicating with their fans through their clothing? I know they thoight they were trying to secretly represent the gay, and chartreuse was involved somehow, but it I still can't figure out how it started or what insane shred of evidence there was to support it. I've tried to wade through the old wanks, but it is too much for me.

My sister sat calmly and watched the cat bite her kid, because that way he learns to stop pulling it's fur!

Yeah, one of my friends did pretty much the same thing. One little scratch, and the kidlet finally figured out that Mama wasn't kidding when she said kitty doesn't like having his tail grabbed.

My baby niece is completely fascinated by my cat (I think she mistakes him for one of her toys), and because she hasn't quite grasped our teachings of "gentle petting," we just let the cat smack her around whenever she pisses him off.

...Of course, he has no front claws, so the message might not be getting through well enough.

Yeah, my parents did that with me. I learned very quickly that kitties like to be gently petted but do not like having their ears pulled.

Why would any woman who would flip out over a minor scratch to the point where she would "demand the cat be killed" (wut, who does that nowadays?) even own a cat and a baby at the same time, let alone allow them in the same crib, let alone take a picture?

Deductive logic does not hold up.

I'm impressed too, but in her scenario she overlooked the defective chain that's holding the heavy opera style chandelier in place.

The cat we had when my son was born was a very patient and protective kitty. Once he reckoned Boychild had reached the age where he could learn, Simba started "correcting" him when he'd get too rough - first, with a gentle tap of the paw, then a less gentle one, and finally, just enough claw to make his point. I think he thought Boychild was his kitten.

My mom had a cat like that when I was born. She let me (the cat, though Mom didn't interfere either) dress her up in doll clothes when I must have been too small not to pull on her legs--I don't remember it but we have pictures--but I do remember the snarl and hard nip when I got old enough to know better but pulled her tail anyway.

It's especially remarkable when male cats get all maternal like that, since in the wild they, you know, kill other toms' kittens. I wonder whether it's neutering or pet socialization.
