So, let's consider what our military considers acceptable and unacceptable:

1) Members of right-wing racist groups? OK as long as they don't actually lynch anyone while in uniform.
2) People who think the military oath to defend the Constitution doesn't apply when it comes to the Establishment Clause? Hell, we'll promote 'em to the Joint Chiefs!
3) Child rapists? As long as they've done their time, they're eligible.
4) Ponyfuckers? Not a problem, apparently.

5) Gay people serving openly? Um...

The comment was directed more at the military administration than the actual soldiers (a.k.a. the people who do all the work and take all the risks). I know there are soldiers who are more reasonable -- I have a number among my friends, and I train with several. Hell, from what I've heard lately they're in the majority -- which just makes the attitude of TPTB even more obnoxious.
