So. Waiter Rant. Kind of like customers_suck, except it's only one person posting ("Waiter"), and it's usually wank-free. Usually.

The waiter that writes the blog recently started working in a new restaurant, and has become . . . slightly bitter. As a result, he posted first "50 Signs You're Working in a Bad Restaurant," then "50 Signs You're an Asshole Customer." The first doesn't garner much attention, but the second . . .

Four hundred comments later, people are still wanking over:

-Whether it's acceptable to bring your own tea (look for Desert Princess, misspelled as Dessert Princess).
-Whether it's acceptable to leave a tip on a credit card that ends in a weird amount ($2.51 on a tab for $10.49).
-If you should tip on takeout.
-If asking about the music is okay.
-Why saying that you're allergic to an ingredient in order to get it taken out of your food is evil.
-How bitter "Waiter" has become.
-What is a 'normal' tip—fifteen or twenty percent.

Namecalling and accusations of elitism abound, and perhaps 1/4 of replies become non-wanky.

Everyone is all, "But what's wrong with asking for the music?"

What's wrong is this: most servers aren't DJs. They have other things on their mind rather than the music. Maybe really expensive restaurants do insist that their servers be up on the music, but honestly, when I was a server (at a Mexican restaurant) I didn't particularly think about it. It's not that rude, it's just not something that the waiter is going to be concerned about.

Bringing anything of your own to a restaurant (unless it's for bona-fide health reasons) is tasteless and makes you look like a cheap-ass. Yes, tea is overpriced. But if you can't afford it, you can't afford to eat out. A restaurant is not a picnic.

People lie about allergies because they hope that their weird-ass demands will be taken more seriously. I do sympathize with those that really have allergies, however -- I can't count how many times my lactose-intolerant mother would specifically say "no cheese" but still end up with cheese. However, at some point servers start wondering why a person with so many dietary restrictions is at a restaurant which mainly serves food they can't eat. I once had people ask for "no oil" for their fajitas because they were trying to be health-conscious. Dude, fajitas. What are they without the oil?

The meticulous "adding" on checks is annoying because it seems like the person was more concerned about getting a nice round number than giving the server a tip he or she deserved. (Also, the server does not care about all their checks ending in nice round numbers -- they add up unevenly, anyway).

I'd say 15% is still normal but 20% should be given for either large checks or small checks (Don't give less than $1 even if you only ordered $4 worth of food). It's nice to leave more if you stayed at your table for awhile as well (just because the server might have gotten more if your table could have been used by others).

It'll be okay. There there. Pat pat. Rinse and repeat as many times as necessary.

In the case of my lactose-intolerant aunt going to pizza places, it's because she's got pizza-loving nieces and nephews. It doesn't help that she's also allergic to mushrooms. Luckily the pizza place near my home has a cheese-free slice offered regularly.

In my life, it's usually because I'm out with my coworkers on an "optional" after-work-hours party. Note how "optional" is in quote marks here.

Tips: Because You Care. Have you hugged your waitress today?

Because they're travelling and the restaurant was the one they can find? Because they're eating with a group of other people and lost the "where are we having dinner" debate?

Wordy. And I'm extremely poor atm. But hey, that means that I either eat 1) at home 2) take out 3) not right now.

Bringing your own drinks is just not done. Ask for water and keep the Coke for the way home.

It's always been perfectly acceptable in my experience to bring your own wine. The restaurant is actually making money on those standard 15% corkage fees, especially considering they charge 15% of the mark-up price not the retail price.
