Um, net stuff is real life. Not wanting to be wanky, but maybe not here, but in other situations if someone does something online that's clearly illegal, it's our responsibility to do something about it.

Child pornography comes to mind, as does animal cruelty, etc, etc.

The net isn't operating in some vacuum, it's part of the world we live in.

Child pornography, animal cruelty - sure.

Where do we draw the line though? Pretty soon people will be turning in parents who spank or women who don't breastfeed their babies for "child abuse". You know, that whole "slippery slope" thing.

The problem with this is that even though it might appear cut and dried, there really are no easy answers here.

Well, uh, fucking an animal is pretty cut and dried. But that said, the *rule* they broke was organizing it here. We're not vigilantes. Others might be vigilantes, but not on, like, our yard.

OK, that makes sense.

Well, where do you draw the line when it's your neighbours, or a workmate, or you suspect your eight year old niece is being interfered with by her father.

Its not easy, but the net isn't special in that regard. And I firmly believe that if you know something is happening, where someone is getting hurt and you don't do anything, you're complicit.

I have to confess that back in the early '90s when the 'net was still young and fresh, I came across a post in a group I read that offered access to pics of naked children. I called* the FBI on their sorry asses.

*Yes, an actual phone call. This was before web pages (or at least before everyone and his grandmother had web pages). The FBI agent I spoke with didn't seem to know what I was talking about - where had I seen this "post"? It took me a long time to get him to understand that I'd seen it on an online community. Ah, the good old days.
