"All these Lies are spurt"
Today on [info]b0st0n, Poet Laureate hopeful deleriumschild made an excited post about her first published book. When b0st0n members pointed out her bad spelling and the fact that she published the book herself, however, her squeeing quickly turned into tantrum-throwing. Then she deleted the post (rumor has it after someone commented saying she tried to get through the book but instead burned it, cut herself, and wrote a poem).

Lucky for us, [info]_b0st0n_snark is picking up the slack and filling us in here. There's even a screencap of the original post. Most of the wank is hidden now in collapsed threads, but you can see where people are getting lubed up.

Deleriumschild made a post in her own journal about it, too:

Dear B0st0n community,
thanks for proving my point
-Embarrassed you're from my town

If you're really brave, you can read excerpts from her book, aptly titled Delirium's Child. She's deleted the book and brought it back once, to get rid of a nasty review, so if it goes away it will probably come back. Here's an example of her, uh, writing:

I've been your friend since day one
I've stuck by your side no matter what
I like you because you're a lot of fun
I know sometimes you want to take the knife
Don't do it, because it's not worth your time

ETA: Don't miss her Craigslist ad and this chat log. They're full of wtf. There's also a little more info on the deleted post here.

...

Y'know, this and a review I read earlier about a DVD of a show by two female comedians in which the reviewer complained that they were making jokes about menstruation that would make the viewer wonder why on Earth women couldn't be funny (because God forbid women makes jokes about things that happen to them) is really quite annoying.

Yeah, it is a bit of a confusing sentence. Let's see if I can clarify it a bit.

Right, so the panel of professional comedians judging what is and is not funny annoys me.

A reviewer reviewed a show by two female comedians. The reviewer overall liked the show, but complained that the female comedians made a joke about menstruation. This made the review wonder why women weren't funny. Since the reviewer was male, this annoyed me, because God forbid a male reviewer has to put himself in the comedian's shoes for a moment.

Hope that clarified things a bit.

Ah! Got it.

I can see why they picked professional comedians--presumably they've proven themselves to be funny because they have viable careers in comedy--and they did say the comedians' evaluations of the test jokes had a high level of agreement, suggesting that the comedians all had roughly the same sense of humor, and that this sense of humor was shared by a large audience. I still resist the idea that humor is measurable. Like you pointed out, so much depends on taste and experience.

OTOH, the study did show that humor can be measured, at least from a commercial standpoint... and I use similar criteria to judge wannabe authors... Augh! I contradict myself. But dammit, I contradict myself proudly and with full self-knowledge.

Well, yeah, I guess that if you're going to test someone's sense of humour, you might as well use professionals, since how else can you do that?
