Childfree vs Metaquotes vs Stupid_free vs 'George Carlin' of the Furry Internets
(moved from [info]clairvoyantwank

Over on Metaquotes</s>, [info]2_gryphon is quoted with an amusing -- and relatively benign -- retelling of his verbal sparring with an irate father.

And then a gleeful [info]featherypony happily comments that they'd love to share the post with [info]childfree.

Power Word: KNEE-JERK

[info]mayavada swoops in and lashes out at the OP and the mention of [info]childfree.

Ready. Set. Wank.

Enjoy!

Bonus: It's been reported back to [info]childfree.

And they're off!

EDIT: This wank report has been brought to you by four cups of coffee and all the jelly beans in my kid's Easter basket. *gibber* *gibber*

EDIT II: It's now made it to [info]stupid_free, [info]customers_suck, [info]cs_snark and [info]cf_snark

Good times

No, I have. I just think it's stupid to apply it in this situation to justify the guy's behavior.

Actaully, I thought that underneath the batshit he had a good point. It was poorly expressed, but the concept of "it takes a village to raise a child" also means that people maybe shouldn't feel as reluctant to speak up if a child is acting like a dicksmack in public.

There was a great "secret camera" thing I saw on some evening news show where they got together three actors -- one adult and two kids -- and put them into a restaurant, and told the kids to just flat-out go nuts, to see what would happen. Every one of the other diners was glaring daggers at them, but no one was saying anything. The other diners were grumbling to themselves a lot, but almost nobody said anything to the parent of the kids.

The only diner who said anything was another six-year-old girl who first asked her mother if they could complain to the manager to make the other kids stop, and her mother told her no, to just ignore it. But instead, the girl drew a little sign saying "SIT DOWN!" and showed it to the two actor kids. The two actor kids had also been expressly told to ignore any adult asking them to be quiet, but when this six-year-old told them to sit down, down they sat.

Part of looking out for each other might just be speaking up more often in cases like that. That's part of "it takes a village," is what the OP's point was.

I do think you have a point and I don't believe the saying is always wrong. Still, I don't think the situation the OP had been telling (inventing?) was the good way to do this or the good way to apply the saying. Also, it is my personal opinion the manager and restaurant workers should be the one handling this and not other customers (in most case).

Yeah, you're right -- elsewhere in the thread, Miss Manners was quoted as saying the correct thing to do would be to ask a manager to handle this, and that seems best all around.
