Were it not for Alan Mulally, Nancy Pelosi might be President of the United States right now
Ford Motor Company arranged a demonstration of their high tech hydrogen-electric hybrid car on the White House lawn for President Bush. The plan was for President Bush to plug in the car, photogs take pictures, everybody's happy. Well, the extension cord was placed by the rear of the car (where the hydrogen tank is) rather than on the side near the outlet. As President Bush approached the extension cord, Alan Mulally, CEO of Ford, had visions of splodey-plums dancing in his head and high-tailed it to physically ensure that President Bush did not put the plug into the hydrogen tank.

Naturally, the blog and news articles on this are a buffet of snark, with the comboxes as dessert wank. Enjoy the potato crisps of Ford blaming, the sandwich board of Left vs. Right, and the thick pungent stew of laments, then cleanse your palate with a delicious fruit salad of non sequiturs.

Actually, while loading up the dishwasher, it occured to me...

Perhaps the poor man just didn't want the Ford Corporation on the sacrifical altar, even if for the greater good. Because face it. Would he really have panicked and grabbed Bush like that if he wasn't afraid of a worst-case scenario? And in order to fear that, I think he'd have to hold the opinion that Dubya is a bumbling idiot.

He didn't save the president. He just said that he thinks the man a fool. Actions speak so much louder than words. :D

Maybe he was worried because the car's insurance doesn't cover "Accidental Presidential Assassination."

It would also reflect badly on his company because they'd designed a car that any idiot could blow himself up with in one easy step. And, while Bush and Cheney being blown to smithereens would be a small loss, the next idiot who came along might be more valuable.

Now, be fair -- Dubya isn't just any idiot.

also, hybrid cars may be considered WMDs after that.

I'm fairly certain they're close enough now for government work.

First thing that popped into my head.

I'm just thinking that Mulally must really hate Bush to be so openly talking about what happened.

I mean, what CEO of a car manufacturer would willingly admit that an idiot sticking an extension cord to the wrong hole could make their car blow up?

That's a huge flaw in the design, considering there're plenty of idiots in this world.

Not only that, but as Ford and Michigan are both in tough shape economically, blowing up the car and the President canNOT be good for business. ;)

Srsly. Maybe this is their new marketing strategy-- "Buy a Ford Hybrid! Eliminate the idiots in your life!"

But the problem is that this works only once per idiot, unless you can gather all of them in one convenient place. This might get awfully expensive very quickly.

I meant *once per car, unless you gather all the idiots* etc. In my defense, it's deep night here.

I would hope this would work only once per idiot, unless you're got some special Dawn of the Dead idiots.
