I wish I had a joke about drinking problems...
On stupid_free, [info]gridlore posts link to an account of an occasion where he, quote, "met rudeness with snark". Specifically, some black girl didn't want to sit next to anyone, tried to make him give up his seat-with an empty one next to him-and he made fun of her in a very House-like way. Everyone hastens to call BS. Incidentally, all little old ladies speak English, and GridLore doesn't get to complain because [info]thexphial's Jewish ancestors were lynched.

Please, no Irishbashing.
EDIT: Personally, I would've just gone "Yes." and kept on eating my Vanilla Frosty. Now at Wendy's!

Assuming this actually happened (which, let's be honest, it didn't.) why is everyone focusing on his throwaway comment at the end? The underlying motivation for the piece seemed to be sexual politics with the 'more oppressed than thou' flourish at the end being more to remind he's Irish. Irish and therefore 'cool'.

Or course, I've never understood getting embroiled in the argument about whose ancestors were more oppressed. It's completely irrelevant. Most people have ancestors who were oppressed and I'm sure none of them took a break from their travails to go 'Well, at least I'm not black/irish/romany. They REALLY have it bad.' It has absolutely nothing to do with modern day racism or sexism.

(I know a lot of people started out staying that but most of them seemed to get dragged into the 'Shut up about being Irish, you twat! The ___ had it worse' trap.)

That said I'm a Northern Irish Prod woman on the internet and no one has ever oppressed me. I feel unloved.

My problem wasn't that Irish weren't better/worse off than blacks, my point was that he was crowing on about "knowing history" which meant he should no that widespread oppression of the Irish ended in the fucking NINETEENTH century, of which he was not a part.

*shrugs*

I'm sure he does. He presumably meant that the Irish knew all about oppression historically. I don't think anyone could reasonably claim that the Irish are discriminated against in a widespread fashion in the modern world. (And before anyone *starts* - yes 'stupid mick' jokes can get old but they aren't oppression.)*

My issue - such as it is cos I think about this all of once very twenty wanks - is that these discussions always seem to degenerate into this wang-waving contest:

'Oh my god - my granny was oppressed by a British soldier/Russian aristocrat/the patriarchy.'

'You call that oppression? You don't oppression from a whole in the ground. The *political/racial/sexual group of choice* were oppressed TWICE that much.'

Which is irrelvant. It also obfuscates the one valid comment that can be made - Yeah, but you've not been oppressed for being Irish.

It turns into the Four Yorkshiremen sketch, minus all the funny.

The whole *don't start* stuff wasn't aimed at you. I've just had people claim that the occasional English man, Scots man and Irish man joke is a deep and painful affront to their sense of self. Fair enough if their sense of self is that fragile but don't get me soggy over it.

I didn't think you were attacking me, because you're arguing the same thing.

Gridlore just wants everyone to see his penis over everything.

Sometimes I'm amazed at the ability people have to be completely deaf to how utterly ridiculous they sound.

I wish I had a joke about drinking problems...

"They say alcoholism is a disease, but it's the only one you can get
mad at someone for having.
It's like - 'dammit, Otto, you're an ALCOHOLIC.
... Dammit, Otto, YOU'VE GOT LUPUS'.
One of these just doesn't sound right." - Mitch Hedburg
