I wish I had a joke about drinking problems...
On stupid_free, [info]gridlore posts link to an account of an occasion where he, quote, "met rudeness with snark". Specifically, some black girl didn't want to sit next to anyone, tried to make him give up his seat-with an empty one next to him-and he made fun of her in a very House-like way. Everyone hastens to call BS. Incidentally, all little old ladies speak English, and GridLore doesn't get to complain because [info]thexphial's Jewish ancestors were lynched.

Please, no Irishbashing.
EDIT: Personally, I would've just gone "Yes." and kept on eating my Vanilla Frosty. Now at Wendy's!

Oh, I see. You're from Connecticut. And Bridgeport to boot. You're not even a real New Englander. No wonder you're putting on airs.

What?

We were eating troll-meat for breakfast when you were barely one step above a pap smear.

What?

Collective "women's studies"/community college OH NOES remarks: what?

Still:

But if you can parade your ignorance as an excuse to heap upon a complete stranger who's "crime" is not giving up his seat when other's were available, then I can use the crappy day I just had to call you out as a sorry excuse for a human being who obviously still lives with their mother and couldn't successfully debate their way out of her womb.

To be a condescending asshat makes that guy's English grate! Hee.

My brain has actually seized up and stopped working at the idea that the ORIGINAL YANKEES are not New Englanders.

In Massachusetts, during snipe-fests, the, "MY family came off the Mayflower before YOURS" thing gets pulled sometimes. Rare, but it happens. No joke.

And that's all I have to offer.

Funny story...

My boyfriend's family (particularly of interest to his brother) can trace their family back quite a ways. Part of their family, the family that's in Canada, can be traced to living in Virginia before the American Revolution. He discovered, in Virginia, that there's a university bearing his family's name. Interested, he looked into it. As it turned out, it was named after the black man who had founded it, because slaves took the last names of their owners, don'tcha know? He was rather embarassed about that one.

See, on the one hand, I'm annoyed at that because I'm from Eastern Connecticut, and that's serious New England right there.

On the other hand, I'm not surprised, because I've discovered that in the eyes of the rest of the country, Connecticut actually has no discernible identity whatsoever. The western half is the sixth borough of New York City, and the eastern half is a bizarre Twilight Zone.

Connecticut: that place with trees and malls one drives through to get to New York.
