slappy internets slapfight
On Weepingcock, a community dedicated to making fun of bad sex descriptions in fiction, an excerpt is posted. The excerpt in question involves slappy testicles. The OP says
Seriously, I think these authors forget the basics of how male anatomy functions.

Some guy named tenou_k throws a hissyfit. Or something. Cue people arguing, insulting, and generally violating Sealink's Law of Saccharine Condescension.

That said; aw, mousie!

For some reason, it bothers me with 'mate' is used in fiction to describe someone's lover. I dunno why. Anyone else feel this?

It's got a bestiality sort of tone to it. And we don't want that.

Exactly. The further we can get from human/animal relations, the better.

It's probably the second most commonly used word in DBZ fics, right after "the".

So, no, not really.

However, since I'm going to hell anyway: "His mate? A unicorn!"

That must be it. DBZ was my first online fandom I was involved in. But then, everything about DBZ was uber cheesy so "mate" was a bit more tolerable in context.

Unicorn power!

I'd like to think that the people who do that will someday meet up with a large gang of seriously pissed-off Australians.

I <3 her way too much. She commented positively on one of my Draco/Pansy fics and I just about died from squee.
I've always really liked your icon too. Monty Python's mock-BBC announcements were so great.

I usually don't have much to do with HP fanart, but I fangirl makani like whoa. Her facial expressions are amazing, and the fan illustrations she did for chapter two of HBP just blew me away, especially the one where Narcissa looks every inch the puddle of grieving despair and Bellatrix is just bitchily telling her to suck it up.

I had a friend who insisted on doing that in conversations. She'd talk about how relations should be with "one's mate", and I just wanted to scream.

Was never able to quite articulate *why*.

IMO, people should use the word lover a lot more. I like that word.

I like it to. But it usually trips over my tongue. I'm a bit of a prude (no, really? *gasp*) and the idea of confirming to people that I have *actually* had sex...

...

I need to get over that, cuz damn sex is fun.

I have to disagree and be the minority: I dislike the word "lover" strongly and much, much prefer to hear "mate". I don't know why; personal preference, I guess. :)

I dislike it because it often implies that the story is heading in the direction of the soulmate premise and/or that one person is a creature of some kind and needs to "mate" to live. I hate both ideas. I would especially like to see them die out of any fiction involving werewolves, plzkthx. (Wolves will mate with their relatives and prevent subordinates in the pack from breeding. They also regurgitate food for their pups. For some reason, this is never considered sexy enough to be in the werewolf fiction).

I have to work this into a fic now, somehow. Have to.

While it wasn't portrayed in a sexy way (and, umm, rightfully so), the whole regurgitation bit was in a Snape/Lupin fic, Motherless Child by Ellid (which can be found on Moonshadow).

In my friend's werewolf story, there is actually something about their dogs (i.e. pets) not needing to be spayed/neutered because the werewolves give off hormones that basically sterilized the dogs. There are no pups, though. XD

In fairness, you could argue that werewolves don't need to regurgitate food because they have hands and thus can carry it.

I know someone who is bothered by the casual use of the word 'lover'. Maybe the two of you could become mates? I mean the English kind of mates, of course!
